Q. My five-year-old daughter’s new best friend comes from a family with same-sex parents. I am stuck on how to begin to answer questions she may have about this. Can you help me with some pointers on how to handle the discussion?

The first reaction from the panel was that there is an assumption that the daughter is going to have questions about her friend’s parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Lon Fernandez of Bethlehem announce the engagement of their daughter, Alyssa Marie Fernandez, to Anthony Michael Calvano, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Calvano of Aston, Delaware County.

The bride-elect, a graduate of DeSales University, works for Lehigh University.

Her fiance, also a graduate of DeSales University, is expected to graduate in May 2016 from Notre Dame University Law School.

He plans to work for Richards, Layton & Finger, Wilmington, Del.

An August 2016 wedding is planned.

Catherine and Leo Witczak of Whitehall celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Oct. 14.

Catherine is the daughter of the late John and Anna (Solovay) Turbedsky, who lived in Cementon.

She attended Whitehall High School and the Allentown Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for many years as a nurse in the hospital and doctors’ offices in Allentown.

Leo is the son of the late Joseph and Victoria (Czyzewska) Witczak, who lived in Allentown.
