Wednesday, January 30, 2013 by PAUL WILLISTEIN in Focus

"Zero Dark Thirty," an Oscar picrtue nominee and an American Film Institute movie of the year, is an intense cinema-going experience.

"Zero Dark Thirty" is nothing less than an account of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and The Pentagon and bin Laden's killing by United States Navy S.E.A.L. Team 6 in May 2011.

Allentown Symphony Orchestra concerts painting from a palette of romantic music

An orchestra is an amazing ensemble composed of so many wonderful instruments. When put together, the sounds that they produce can be absolutely stunning.

French composer Maurice Ravel was a master at creating new sounds for the orchestra. In his ballet "Daphnis and Chloe," he uses a very large orchestra and writes in such a way that the music just cascades around us. He even uses a large chorus as an instrumental sound, where all the members of the chorus sing on the syllable "Ah" and the voices meld into the orchestra, creating yet another color for our ears to enjoy.

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 by DEB BOYLAN Special to The Press in Focus

Take one-part theatrical spectacle, toss in operatic vocals, add in wind instruments, accordion, violin, upright bass, saxophone, musical saw, sprinkle with a dash of belly dancing and a dollop of Klezmer for seasoning, add a hint of vaudeville, blend it together vigorously, turn it upside down and send it out on a road trip from Portland, Ore., and you have Vagabond Opera.

Much like a brilliant culinary recipe, Vagabond Opera combines a few standard ingredients with custom additives to create a dish best served live.

THEATER REVIEW Laughter soars in PPH 'Boeing, Boeing'

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 by DEB BOYLAN Special to The Press in Focus

Pennsylvania Playhouse, Illick's Mill Road, Bethlehem leads off its 2013 "Director's Cut" season with the divine farce, "Boeing Boeing," weekends through Feb. 3. This bit of mid-century madness is a revival of the 1960 French play written by Marc Camoletti and translated into English by Beverly Cross and Francine Evans. It was also released as a Hollywood film in 1965 starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis.

The comedy, featuring a six-member ensemble, is a fast-paced romp with each cast member having an equally important role in the furthering and ultimately resolving of the plot.

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 by DEB BOYLAN Special to The Press in Focus

The songs remain the same, and that's just fine for Creedence Clearwater Revisited bass player and 1993 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Stu Cook.

The band, which formed in 1995 and actively tours throughout the United States and abroad, recently completed a four-night "Rock Legends" cruise which sailed from Ft. Lauderdale to the northern coast of Haiti.

Back on terra firma, Creedence continues an extensive 2013 tour schedule with an 8 p.m. Jan. 23 concert at Sands Bethlehem Event Center, 77 Sands Boulevard, Bethlehem.
