Wednesday, March 20, 2019 by CJ HEMERLY in Sports

Emmaus girls lacrosse head coach Roxann Betz is entering her third year at the helm of the program. She is no longer new to her players and their talents, and her players know what is expected of them.

Last season showed what the Hornets are capable of and can be capable of as they finished the 2018 campaign 25-16 and qualified for both the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 Tournament.

The Emmaus boys volleyball team has been a model of consistency over the last two seasons. It has also been the class of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11.

The Green Hornets have won back-to-back District 11 Class 3A championships and also won the EPC title the last two years. It has been one of the best runs since the Hornets dominated the sport in the old EPC two decades ago under head coach Dave Stever.

Hornets reach District 11 semifinal

The Emmaus boys basketball team was itching to get back on the court.

Following a heartbreaking loss in the final seconds of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference title game, the Green Hornets had a week off to think about that game and to prepare for a district title run.

The time off and hunger from that loss helped as top-seed Emmaus came out fast and led from start to finish, taking care of ninth-seeded Pocono Mountain West 76-60 last Saturday night at Allen High School in the District 11 Class 6A Quarterfinal Round.

Adversity. That was a word that senior Zach Sabol of the Emmaus boys basketball team was faced with early on in his high school playing career.

Sabol reached the 1,000-point milestone for his program earlier this month, back on February 8. And he did it on a big stage and in front of his home crowd, climbing the plateau against Central Catholic in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference quarterfinals at Emmaus High School.

Beca takes EPC title on late Paz basket

Despite a big night from one of Emmaus seniors, Bethlehem Catholic took Saturday’s East Penn Conference title game behind the effort of it’s own senior in Justin Paz.

The Golden Hawks’ Justin Paz hit the game-winning shot for the second straight game. His buzzer beater against the Hornets came after he drove the length of the court with less than 10 seconds to go and converted a layup to give the Golden Hawks a 46-44 win in the league final last Saturday night at Easton Area Middle School.

EHS ice hockey falls on late Nazareth goals

Thursday, February 14, 2019 by CJ HEMERLY in Sports

It was all setting up nicely for the Emmaus ice hockey team.

The Hornets, which were already eliminated from playoff contention, were playing in their final regular season game of the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Ice Hockey League Monday.

The team was in position to end the season with a win, leading Nazareth 2-0 late in the second period. But four straight Blue Eagle goals, three in the third period, propelled Nazareth (3-11-2 overall, 8 points) to a 4-2 victory over the Green Hornets (5-11) last Monday evening at Bethlehem Municipal Ice Hockey rink.

Hornets top Trojans, 60-51

There aren’t many better feelings in sports than beating a rival. What’s even better is beating a rival team twice in the same season.

That’s exactly what happened last week as four Emmaus boys basketball players scored in double-figures and Emmaus fought back in the second half to take down Parkland 60-51 last Thursday night in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference showdown on the road at Parkland High School. It was the second straight victory for the Green Hornets (17-3 overall, 12-2 EPC) over the Trojans (13-7, 9-5) and the sixth consecutive win overall for Emmaus.

Second-half spurt lifts EHS

The Emmaus boys basketball team came alive after halftime and used a third-quarter spurt to win the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Skyline Division game 52-49 last Friday night at Emmaus High School on senior night.

The Green Hornets, playing in their final home game of the 2018-19 regular season, honored a large number of seniors, eight total, before the game with the Kids. Josh Moyer, Bryce Diehl, Stefan Rollins, Cameron Brooks, Ethan Parvel, Mark Swedberg, Zach Sabol and Devon Boyko round out the 2019 senior class for the Emmaus program.

Hornets win three straight

The Emmaus boys basketball team had faced its first adversity of the 2018-19 regular season earlier this month when it lost its two out of three games in a span of a week. But since January 11, the Green Hornets have won their last three games and righted the ship.

They have depth and are experienced, and they used both last Friday night as senior starter Zach Sabol and senior sixth-man Mark Swedberg combined to score 47 points in a 71-66 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game over Allen at Emmaus High School.
