Hornets look to battle back against Red Rovers

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

For the first time this 2012 season, the Emmaus football team will be playing after a defeat. The Hornets will look to bounce back against Easton this Friday night after a 44-12 loss at Freedom last Friday.

"Our players have to put it behind them and move forward," said head coach Joe Bottiglieri. "That's the only thing we can do. At practice we've focused on ourselves, our technique and getting our assignments down. We talked about how we're going to attack Easton's defense and...

Lil' Hornets take three of four from NP

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by TIM PATTERSON Special to the Press in Sports

It was an exciting weekend for the Emmaus youth football teams as they took three games against North Parkland, including splitting a pair of overtime contests.

The Hornets 125-pound team lost a hard fought game 18-12 in overtime to the North Parkland Buffaloes for their first loss of the season. The Hornets controlled the first half and Liam Toomey caught a touchdown pass from Giuseppe Carbone to put Emmaus up 6-0. North Parkland went ahead 12-6 in the second half, taking advantage...

Schumaker wins LVC golf crown

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

The old golf adage rings true. Drive for show. Putt for dough.

Grant Schumaker might not win many long drive contests. And he certainly won't receive any dough for Monday's win. But it was solid putting that led the Emmaus junior to this year's Lehigh Valley Conference golf title.

Shumaker shot an even par 72 at Allentown Municipal to win the tournament by four strokes over a quartet of players that tied for second place.

"There are so many good players in this...

Field hockey has 139-game win streak snapped

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Nine years without a loss to a Lehigh Valley Conference field hockey team is a long time and finally, it happened.

After 139 straight LVC wins, Liberty downed the Emmaus Lady Hornets 1-0 in overtime on Monday night.

The numbers of the streak are staggering. If 139 games, covering nine years isn't impressive enough, how about the fact that the loss is the first to Liberty by a team coached by Sue Butz-Stavin, who is in her 37th season. The goal was the first scored by Liberty...

Volleyball team drops Central

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by LOU RUSNOCK in HS Sports

Volleyball teams have fairly defined roles.

One player does the bulk of the setting and the rest fall into two groups: hitters and diggers.

It's rare a team finds a player who can contribute greatly in both areas, and that's what makes Mackenzie O'Brien a rare player.

The Emmaus sophomore outside hitter was a force on both ends of the court in a big early season matchup with Central. She racked up 12 kills and 14 digs as the Hornets stormed back from losing a tight first...

Senior Roda boots boys past Nazareth

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Hornets' soccer team is extremely happy that A.J. Bishop is back with their team after a season without him. Having said that though, they found a way to pick up a win against Nazareth, thanks mainly to senior Ben Roda, who picked up a goal and an assist in the win.

There's no denying that Bishop has been the team leader offensively for the Hornets. Through the five games that he's played, Bishop has already amassed eight goals and an assist after a somewhat slow start. Bishop...

Work pays off for girls tennis team

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

After going 3-10 last season with a young tennis team in her first season as Emmaus girls tennis coach, you wouldn't blame Kelly Musselman for not expecting too much out of her team in 2012.

Well, surprise.

Musselman's squad is now 7-3 on the season opening a lot of eyes, including those of their coach.

"I'll be honest, our goal this season was to win more matches than last year," admitted Musselman. "At first, we were surprised when the wins started to add up. We now...

Campbell is off to a good start for Panthers

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

Alexa Campbell is coming off of a strong junior campaign in 2011 for the Pitt volleyball team.

She played in all 33 of the Panthers matches, and recorded career-highs in digs (260), service aces (26), assists (19) and block assists (5). So there isn't much else the senior outside hitter could accomplish, right?

So far in the young season, Campbell, a 2009 Emmaus graduate, has earned a place on the Pitt Invitational All-Tournament team and to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate...

Lil' Hornets continue to strong play

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by TIM PATTERSON Special to the Press in Sports

The Emmaus Lil' Hornets continued their stellar play in SYFL action, picking up wins at the 125-, 110- and 95-pound levels.

The 125-pound Emmaus team celebrated a 44-0 win over Hokey to go to 3-0 on the season. Running touchdowns were scored by Brent Meilinger, Jake Miller, Giuseppe Carbone and Ben Maehrer. Quarterback Alex Soucy threw a touchdown pass to Brent Meilinger. The Hornets also had three interceptions by Corbin Carraghan, Brent Meilinger and Harrison Ike, who returned his...

Lower Mac 125s, 110s get wins over Beth. Steelers

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by The Press in Sports

The 3-0 Lower Mac 125s dominated the Bethlehem Steelers by racing out quickly for the second week in a row to a 20-0 halftime lead and holding on for a 26-6 win.

They overpowered the Steelers up front with their big linemen Dennis Csensits and Josh Gross leading the charge. Josh Artis ran the ball with authority putting it in the end zone three times. The highlight of the game was a 65-yard touchdown pass from Stefan Rollins to Cody Gross, who made a spectacular over the shoulder...
