Waterman the cure for 'Parkland hangover'

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Soccer coach John Cari was glad that his team didn't have a hangover this past week. Or, as he called it, "a Parkland hangover."

Cari was referring to his team having to come back from a 4-0 loss to Parkland (8-0) on Wednesday to face a tough Easton Red Rovers (4-4-1) team on Friday. The loss to Parkland ended a four-game win streak for Emmaus and gave the Trojans a bit of revenge for their two losses - one of which ended their season - last year.

Instead of coming back stiff...

Freedom hands Hornets first defeat of the season

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

Not many people expected last Friday night's football game between Emmaus and Freedom at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium to unfold the way it did.

The Hornets entered the game with consecutive dominating efforts in conference play with victories over Bethlehem Catholic and Central Catholic in the previous two weeks.

But the Patriots didn't let any of that outside noise affect their play.

After a 10-point game at halftime, the Patriots reeled off 28 unanswered...

Hornets look to battle back against Red Rovers

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

For the first time this 2012 season, the Emmaus football team will be playing after a defeat. The Hornets will look to bounce back against Easton this Friday night after a 44-12 loss at Freedom last Friday.

"Our players have to put it behind them and move forward," said head coach Joe Bottiglieri. "That's the only thing we can do. At practice we've focused on ourselves, our technique and getting our assignments down. We talked about how we're going to attack Easton's defense and...

Schumaker wins LVC golf crown

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

The old golf adage rings true. Drive for show. Putt for dough.

Grant Schumaker might not win many long drive contests. And he certainly won't receive any dough for Monday's win. But it was solid putting that led the Emmaus junior to this year's Lehigh Valley Conference golf title.

Shumaker shot an even par 72 at Allentown Municipal to win the tournament by four strokes over a quartet of players that tied for second place.

"There are so many good players in this...

Field hockey has 139-game win streak snapped

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Nine years without a loss to a Lehigh Valley Conference field hockey team is a long time and finally, it happened.

After 139 straight LVC wins, Liberty downed the Emmaus Lady Hornets 1-0 in overtime on Monday night.

The numbers of the streak are staggering. If 139 games, covering nine years isn't impressive enough, how about the fact that the loss is the first to Liberty by a team coached by Sue Butz-Stavin, who is in her 37th season. The goal was the first scored by Liberty...

McNelis contributes immediately for Rams

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

When asked what she enjoyed most about the field hockey program at Virginia Commonwealth, junior Meredith McNelis didn't have to think long.

"We're like a family," the 2010 Emmaus grad responded. "We're not just a team and we're together all of the time and get along really well."

Well, it's all in the family for McNelis. Former Green Hornet saw action in 14 games her freshman season, starting three.

The defensive-minded McNelis also made two defensive saves her first...

Youth driving field hockey

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

You don't have to know much about field hockey to know that if you outscore your first four opponents by a combined score of 35-0, you're going to win a lot of games. Of course, if you're following the Emmaus field hockey team, you know that they're used to winning a lot of games.

Offensively, Emmaus had an amazing week, outscoring Central Catholic and Nazareth two teams in the middle of the pack in LVC field hockey by combined scores of 18-0.

Against Central Catholic, it was...

Tough stretch begins

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

After the 38-7 Lehigh Valley Conference victory over Central Catholic last Friday night, Emmaus head coach Joe Bottiglieri didn't want to rejoice too much.

With a new and modified conference schedule this year, every week is a tough matchup. With two consecutive road games at Freedom this Friday night, and at Easton next weekend, Emmaus (3-0) will look to continue its current play that has lifted them to an undefeated mark.

The win over Central was the first for the seniors and...

Injuries hit girls soccer

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Emmaus girls soccer coach Rob Rooney's team is battling through a number of key injuries, but he's not using that as an excuse for his team's 2-3-1start, including 2-2-1 in the Lehigh Valley Conference.

The latest loss came in the Don Hunt Memorial Tournament played on Emmaus' home turf, when the Lady Hornets lost to Whitehall in a physical 3-1 game.

Whitehall players received two yellow cards during the game for their physical play, which was exactly the type of game that...

Big plays lift Green Hornets Central

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Emmaus Green Hornets football team ended a recent skid last Friday night, as they used four long touchdown runs to defeat Central Catholic 38-7 at East Penn School District Stadium. It was the Green Hornets first win over the Vikings since a 17-14 win in 2008.

Wyl Miller, Jake Maehrer, Tom Bisko and Prosper Jolo each accounted for touchdown runs of over 48 yards, pacing a ground attack for Emmaus, which remain unbeaten. The 3-0 start is also the Hornets' best since 2008.
