Emmaus falls to Parkland in D-11 tennis final

Thursday, May 16, 2013 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

The Emmaus boys tennis team ended the season at the most important team match District 11 has to offer.

The Hornets took on Parkland in Saturday's District 11 title match, falling to the Trojans 3-0.

"Parkland has a great team as far as depth on their team," said Emmaus head coach Dimitri Diamandopoulos. "They constantly reload with top players. Our team definitely has some stars. Walking into this match, I knew we lost in the regular season, I thought maybe with this match we...

Girls lax comes up short to Parkland

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

After a 14-4 loss to Parkland back on April 12, the Emmaus girls lacrosse team rattled off five straight Lehigh Valley Conference victories, and six or their last seven wins overall. But last Thursday night at Emmaus Memorial Field, the Lady Green Hornets were stung once again by the Trojans, this time in a one-goal loss, 12-11.

"We've definitely improved since that point," head coach Nancy DeBellis said about the earlier loss to Parkland. "We've had some good runs. The girls are...

Doubles duo falls in District 11 final

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

A week after freshmen phenom Matt FitzMaurice was taken down in the District 11 AAA singles final, FitzMaurice teamed up with junior Rowan Hobson in the District 11 doubles tournament. Ironically, the road to the final went through a familiar pairing.

In the semifinal round, FitzMaurice/Hobson defeated fellow teammates Ryan Jaeger and Mike Hensler 6-1, 6-0, and they did not lose more than two games in a set up to the final. But Parkland's No. 1 seed of Egor Ivanov and Nick Kshatri...

Fatzinger HR fuels victory

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Jason Fatzinger doesn't consider himself to be a power-hitter, but he does have a knack for summoning some extra power at the most opportune times. Against Nazareth earlier this season, Fatzinger launched a game-winning home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Nazareth 3-2. Last week, he went deep against Freedom to start a big offensive day for the Hornets.

Emmaus and Freedom were scoreless in the top of the third when Fatzinger ripped a long home run to left-center field...

Future of LVC still uncertain

Wednesday, May 8, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

When the East Penn Conference broke up back in 1997, Central Catholic athletic director Dennis Ramella thought he'd never have to go through such a thing again. In fact, he refers to it as the worst thing he's encountered during his tenure as an AD.

Fast forward 16 years and Ramella is going through the same thing again, only with a little twist. This time, instead of being the AD at Central Catholic, he's in the same position with Emmaus.

What is now known as the Lehigh Valley...

FitzMaurice reaches D-11 title match

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

Matt FitzMaurice is new to the high school tennis scene, but that didn't stop him from dominating most of the field at last weekend's District 11 Class AAA singles tournament. The freshman breezed through the first four rounds, winning every set, on his way to the district final.

"It's been awesome," FitzMaurice described his first year of competitive high school tennis. "It's really just the first time I've played for my school, not so much just myself. It was an incredible...

Brosky wins gold at ASD Invitational Meet

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

Hanna Brosky has made large strides, literally and figuratively, in just two years as a competitive high school runner.

The Emmaus junior seems to get faster with each meet she runs.

She began her mid-distance running career last spring with great success. She continued that success this season and plans for it to continue through the postseason.

Brosky ran a personal best time of 2:13.82 last Friday to win the 800-meter gold medal at the Allentown School District...

Bottiglieri ends 11-year run

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

Back in 2002 the Emmaus football program was on a downward slide. The Green Hornets had not recorded a winning season in 17 years, and they were searching for a new head coach that could revitalize the school, and bring football back to relevancy.

Joe Bottiglieri came calling, and his coaching experience paid dividends right from the start.

His second year in 2003, the Green Hornets finished with a 6-4 mark, their first winning season since 1986. And in 2004, Emmaus reached the...

MVC, LVC talk of 4A superconference

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by PETER CAR in HS Sports

Where there's smoke, there's fire, and the news of a Lehigh Valley super-conference finally came to fruition last week.

After months of rumors and speculation about the future of the Lehigh Valley Conference, the Mountain Valley Conference stepped in and sent out an invitation to 12 neighboring schools to ultimately form a "big school super-conference," according to Stroudsburg Principal and MVC President Jeff Sodl.

All of the current LVC members, except for Bethlehem Catholic...

Softball must recover from two losses

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

For the first time this season, the Lady Green Hornet softball team has dropped two games in a row.

Losses to Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic, the two-time defending Lehigh Valley Conference champions, have dropped Emmaus to 10-5 overall and 6-4 in the LVC.

Even with the losses, Emmaus is still in good shape to win the West Division of the LVC and has already qualified for districts. With the season winding down, now isn't a good time to start to struggle.
