Tennis caps year at LVC tourney

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by LOU RUSNOCK in HS Sports

The goal was simple for the Emmaus girls tennis team this season show improvement.

After a rough 2011 campaign, the young Hornets grew up, posting 11 wins, eight in league play, this year. That made Monday's Lehigh Valley Conference tournament the icing on the cake.

"We had some tough draws today and ran into some good opponents early on," head coach Kelly Musselman said. "But over the season we really couldn't be any happier. They worked really hard and they all improved so...

Three golfers make District 11 field

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

Mike Lessl knew he was good enough to qualify for districts. But his confidence level stopped about right there.

Heading into Monday's District 11 Golf Championship Qualifier at Woodstone Golf Club in Danielsville, Lessl didn't think he could finish among the top players at the event. Not until he posted the second-lowest score in Class AAA and third-lowest overall in the event.

Lessl fired a four-over par 76 Monday, leading a contingent of three Emmaus players to advance to...

Elek has drawn inspiration through injury

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

A devastating knee injury sidelined Emily Elek the summer before her freshman season at Canisius. It was an unlucky situation for the 2009 Emmaus graduate, who was looking to continue the success of her senior year, winning First Team All-State honors and the District 11 MVP award.

But she didn't get down or sulk, she worked through it and looked toward the following year.

"I think once I got past the injury part, which was rehabilitating with my trainer, the rest was mostly to...

Boys soccer team clicking at the right time

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

After playing 80 minutes of soccer and neither team scoring, it took Emmaus' A.J. Bishop just 34-seconds to give the Hornets a 1-0 win over Freedom on Monday. The scenario that led to the goal was the same that Emmaus has used several times this season. Ben Roda led Bishop toward the goal with a precision pass and Bishop was able to beat the goalkeeper.

The goal was Bishop's 13th of the season, by far, the most on the team.

"They've played together a lot since they were kids....

GIRLS SOCCER McCarthy provides scoring pop

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

What a difference a week can make.

After lamenting a struggling offense that came close to scoring a lot of goals, Emmaus girls soccer coach Rob Rooney is now watching an offense that finishes off scoring chances left, right and center.

The change came, at least in part, thanks to a 1-1 tie with Wilson West Lawn, a team generally perceived as one of the best in Pennsylvania. At the time the two teams met, Wilson was undefeated and untied this season. Whether it was seeing that...

The Hornet defense played a solid game with Ryan Thomas and Ben Maehrer making numerous tackles in the backfield.

The 110 pounders brought home a win against the Upper...

Hornets look to battle back against Red Rovers

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

For the first time this 2012 season, the Emmaus football team will be playing after a defeat. The Hornets will look to bounce back against Easton this Friday night after a 44-12 loss at Freedom last Friday.

"Our players have to put it behind them and move forward," said head coach Joe Bottiglieri. "That's the only thing we can do. At practice we've focused on ourselves, our technique and getting our assignments down. We talked about how we're going to attack Easton's defense and...

Schumaker wins LVC golf crown

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

The old golf adage rings true. Drive for show. Putt for dough.

Grant Schumaker might not win many long drive contests. And he certainly won't receive any dough for Monday's win. But it was solid putting that led the Emmaus junior to this year's Lehigh Valley Conference golf title.

Shumaker shot an even par 72 at Allentown Municipal to win the tournament by four strokes over a quartet of players that tied for second place.

"There are so many good players in this...

Field hockey has 139-game win streak snapped

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Nine years without a loss to a Lehigh Valley Conference field hockey team is a long time and finally, it happened.

After 139 straight LVC wins, Liberty downed the Emmaus Lady Hornets 1-0 in overtime on Monday night.

The numbers of the streak are staggering. If 139 games, covering nine years isn't impressive enough, how about the fact that the loss is the first to Liberty by a team coached by Sue Butz-Stavin, who is in her 37th season. The goal was the first scored by Liberty...
