Three golfers make District 11 field

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

Mike Lessl knew he was good enough to qualify for districts. But his confidence level stopped about right there.

Heading into Monday's District 11 Golf Championship Qualifier at Woodstone Golf Club in Danielsville, Lessl didn't think he could finish among the top players at the event. Not until he posted the second-lowest score in Class AAA and third-lowest overall in the event.

Lessl fired a four-over par 76 Monday, leading a contingent of three Emmaus players to advance to...

Elek has drawn inspiration through injury

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

A devastating knee injury sidelined Emily Elek the summer before her freshman season at Canisius. It was an unlucky situation for the 2009 Emmaus graduate, who was looking to continue the success of her senior year, winning First Team All-State honors and the District 11 MVP award.

But she didn't get down or sulk, she worked through it and looked toward the following year.

"I think once I got past the injury part, which was rehabilitating with my trainer, the rest was mostly to...

Boys soccer team clicking at the right time

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

After playing 80 minutes of soccer and neither team scoring, it took Emmaus' A.J. Bishop just 34-seconds to give the Hornets a 1-0 win over Freedom on Monday. The scenario that led to the goal was the same that Emmaus has used several times this season. Ben Roda led Bishop toward the goal with a precision pass and Bishop was able to beat the goalkeeper.

The goal was Bishop's 13th of the season, by far, the most on the team.

"They've played together a lot since they were kids....

GIRLS SOCCER McCarthy provides scoring pop

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

What a difference a week can make.

After lamenting a struggling offense that came close to scoring a lot of goals, Emmaus girls soccer coach Rob Rooney is now watching an offense that finishes off scoring chances left, right and center.

The change came, at least in part, thanks to a 1-1 tie with Wilson West Lawn, a team generally perceived as one of the best in Pennsylvania. At the time the two teams met, Wilson was undefeated and untied this season. Whether it was seeing that...

The 110 pounders brought home a win against the Upper...

Field hockey responds to rare loss

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

It didn't take the Emmaus field hockey team long to bounce back after seeing their long win streak snapped against Liberty. Unfortunately for Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom, the Lady Hornets took their frustrations out against those two teams for the loss to Liberty, beating the Golden Hawks 11-0 and the Patriots 9-0.

Coach Sue Butz-Stavin said that her team got careless in the loss to Liberty, losing a key defender because of a yellow card and not stopping Liberty's penetration into...

Volleyball girls suffer first defeat

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

Both Emmaus and Parkland's girls volleyball teams entered last week's Lehigh Valley Conference showdown unbeaten.

And after winning game one 26-24, the Hornets were in good position to hand the Trojans - last season's district and state champion - their first loss.

But that wouldn't be the case. The Trojans responded to win the next three games to defeat the Hornets 3-1 (24-26, 25-14, 26-24, 25-14) to remain perfect on the season.

"When my girls put forth what they put...

McNelis contributes immediately for Rams

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

When asked what she enjoyed most about the field hockey program at Virginia Commonwealth, junior Meredith McNelis didn't have to think long.

"We're like a family," the 2010 Emmaus grad responded. "We're not just a team and we're together all of the time and get along really well."

Well, it's all in the family for McNelis. Former Green Hornet saw action in 14 games her freshman season, starting three.

The defensive-minded McNelis also made two defensive saves her first...

Thursday, September 27, 2012 by TIM PATTERSON Special to the Press in Sports

It was an exciting weekend for the Emmaus youth football teams as they took three games against North Parkland, including splitting a pair of overtime contests.

The Hornets 125-pound team lost a hard fought game 18-12 in overtime to the North Parkland Buffaloes for their first loss of the season. The Hornets controlled the first half and Liam Toomey caught a touchdown pass from Giuseppe Carbone to put Emmaus up 6-0. North Parkland went ahead 12-6 in the second half, taking advantage...
