Four-goal second ignites Hornets

Thursday, November 29, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

Drew Phillipes scored two goals with less than 21 seconds left in the second period, and Emmaus broke through with four second period goals to defeat Whitehall/Salisbury 5-2 last Monday night at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena in Whitehall.

Whitehall/Salisbury took the lead with 2:33 remaining in the first when Gavin Carey slapped in a shot off a centering pass from his brother Ian.

But there was no time spent sulking. Whatever head coach Brian Braun said to his team at the...

Ice hockey drops first game to Parkland

Thursday, November 15, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Emmaus-Parkland rivalry hit the ice on Monday, and like any other sport, it didn't disappoint. The students came out in support, and the play on the ice was physical and fast-paced.

Goalkeeper Mike Smoker was at the top of his game, but it just wasn't enough as Parkland (5-0) found the net five times in a 5-1 win at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena in Whitehall.

The loss was the first for Emmaus (4-1) on the young season.

"Right now we're just looking at how we will...

Football season ends with loss to WVW

Thursday, November 15, 2012 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

For Emmaus football head coach Joe Bottiglieri, there are a set of mixed emotions regarding the Hornets' season that came to an end last Friday night to Wyoming Valley West in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Hornets - who fell 6-0 to the Spartans - were shut out for the first time in five years, and a few costly turnovers ruined a superb defensive effort from Emmaus.

"We just were not in sync," said Bottiglieri. "We didn't execute. We had some new people in the lineup...

Dynamic duo leads way to semis

Thursday, November 15, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Krissy Mikelson and Teresa Carotenuto combining for goals has become a familiar script for the Emmaus field hockey team this season and the script worked again in the PIAA quarterfinals as Emmaus downed Central Dauphin 2-0 to advance to the semifinals against Lower Dauphin.

Mikelson was the first to strike on an assist from Carotenuto and just a few minutes later, Carotenuto put one past Central Dauphin goalie Halle Frisco. The two goals came in the first 20 minutes of the game and...

Thursday, November 15, 2012 by The Press in Sports

The Emmaus Hornets 95-pounders shut out the North Parkland Buffaloes 13-0 in the SYFL semifinals on November 4 and this past weekend finished their season by beating the Lower Mac Mustangs by a score of 12-6 in the finals of the 95-pound SYFL league tournament. The finals win capped off an undefeated 11-0 season.

In the finals it was another total team defensive effort that held the Mustangs to only two first downs and allowed the only score on a late game kickoff return. The...

Field hockey makes it 24 straight

Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

If it's early November, then there must be gold medals from District 11 around the Emmaus field hockey players' necks. For the 24th straight year, Emmaus conquered the world of District 11 field hockey with a 5-1 win over Stroudsburg.

Sophomore Theresa Carotenuto scored two goals to lead the team as the Lady Hornets jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half and never looked back. The first goal went to Anna Kennedy on an assist from Carotenuto before the...

Boys soccer falls in District 11 final

Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Throughout the regular season and into the postseason, defense was a big part of the strategy for the Emmaus boys soccer team.

The Hornets found ways to score enough goals to win, but frustrated teams with their overpowering defense that was unmatched up until the finals of the District 11 tournament. That's when Emmaus ran into Stroudsburg, which was able to match the Hornets kick-for-kick defensively and eventually turn a 0-0 double-overtime game into a 5-4 win for the Mounties on...

Fine caps stellar career as goalie

Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

John Cari, boys soccer coach at Emmaus, isn't very used to having someone in goal for him that doesn't have the last name Fine.

He's losing his latest Fine, Kevin, to graduation after giving him 54 wins and 38 1/2 shutouts during his high school career. Prior to Kevin, there was Andy Fine, who captured 37 wins for Cari.

"My mom actually calculated it a couple weeks ago and my brother and I have somewhere around two-thirds of the wins with coach Cari," laughed Kevin. The latest...
