JV's Hinkle tosses first perfect game

Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

If you're a young pitcher from Emmaus High School, it's not easy to get recognized.

The varsity team has a strong bunch of pitchers and doesn't really need much help right now. But JV pitcher Trey Hinkle might have come up with one way to put himself in the back of varsity coach John Schreiner's mind though - a perfect game.

"Hopefully [the varsity coaches] notice, but they've got good pitching there, so I don't know if they really need any help," said Hinkle after his perfect...

Boys lax comes up short against Manheim

Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Emmaus boys lacrosse team stared at a three-goal deficit heading into the fourth period of their non-conference game against District 3's Manheim Township last Thursday.

Despite trailing 6-3 after the Blue Streaks got a key goal with 1:15 to play in the third period, the Hornets never folded. They responded and scored two goals within the first 5:02 of the final period to make it a one-goal game, and had a number of chances at tying it in the final minute.

But each shot...

Harris starts season with a bang

Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Claire Harris knows how to start the Lehigh Valley Conference portion of the Emmaus softball schedule. Harris led off the game against Allen with a home run that sailed over the left field fence, giving the Hornets a quick 1-0 lead. From there, Emmaus built on its lead and grabbed a 7-2 win over the Canaries.

Harris wasn't done for the day after her home run, as she doubled in her next at-bat to continue her hot hitting streak, which started during the team's recent Florida road trip...

Hornet pitchers have team off to fast start

Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Don't tell anybody, but the Emmaus baseball team has figured out the secret to winning baseball games - don't let the other team score any runs.

That secret has worked well for the team through its first three games, all victories, by a combined score of 33-0.

The schedule opened up with two non-conference games. The first was a 17-0 win over Germantown, which the Hornets followed up with an 8-0 win over Wilson. Emmaus then opened its Lehigh Valley Conference play with another...

Boys lax opens with win

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

In its season opener against Southern Lehigh in the Lehigh Valley Faceoff Classic, the Emmaus boys lacrosse team's play only seemed to get better as the game progressed.

In fact, it got a whole lot better.

Leading by just two at halftime, the Hornets (1-0) ballooned their lead to 14-6 after three periods of play and routed the Spartans 16-7 to open their season with a victory on Saturday evening at Memorial Field.

"We came out here and we played fast like we wanted to,"...

Boys tennis team off to a smashing start

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

The boys tennis season is still in the early stages, but so far it's been both successful and repetitive for Emmaus.

The team has opened the season 3-0, winning each match by a 6-1 outcome. Last week, the Hornets took care of both Liberty and Freedom, one of the better teams in the Lehigh Valley Conference, winning matches on their home court.

Last season, Freedom finished 10-1 in second place in the Lehigh Valley Conference, two games ahead of Emmaus. For the Hornets, they...

DeBellis takes the reigns for girls lax

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

Two years ago, the Emmaus girls lacrosse team captured both the LVC title and District 11 championship.

That was Nancy Debellis's first season as an assistant coach on the team.

This year DeBellis is in her first season as head coach, and the Hornets will look to once again reach those heights.

"We'd like to go through LVCs and the districts," said DeBellis. "That is our goal, to get into that first round [of state playoffs]. Hopefully we can build from this team and get...

Softball looks to take next step

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Remember those commercials where an athlete would win a championship game and proclaim "I'm going to Disney World"? Well, the Emmaus softball team is hoping that their trip to Disney will be preceding a championship.

The team spent some time at the happiest place on Earth recently and came back with a 2-1 record in their three games at the Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando. The team heads south every three years to take part in some sun, fun and softball prior to heading into...

Hornet runners should excel

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Emmaus boys and girls track and field teams will open up the 2013 season next week when the Hornets host Bethlehem Catholic on Thursday.

The girls team went 7-2 in the LVC last season, and while the team lost a number of participants from a year ago, a number of key pieces are returning as the Hornets again aim for the top of the standings.

Junior runner Hanna Brosky returns for her second season and will be one of the cornerstones from the girls side. Brosky - who came in...

Younger players will look to step up for baseball team

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Last season, the Emmaus baseball team finished 12-9 overall and 8-6 in the Lehigh Valley Conference. Those numbers were pretty good, considering that they featured a lot of younger players, who are now moving into even more important roles with the team.

Gone from the roster are five seniors who graduated. This year's team features four seniors - Zach Fotta, Kristyan Koenig, Luke Miller and Luini Ortiz - who could all play important roles with the team.

Last year, Miller was...
