Senior Roda boots boys past Nazareth

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Hornets' soccer team is extremely happy that A.J. Bishop is back with their team after a season without him. Having said that though, they found a way to pick up a win against Nazareth, thanks mainly to senior Ben Roda, who picked up a goal and an assist in the win.

There's no denying that Bishop has been the team leader offensively for the Hornets. Through the five games that he's played, Bishop has already amassed eight goals and an assist after a somewhat slow start. Bishop...

Work pays off for girls tennis team

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

After going 3-10 last season with a young tennis team in her first season as Emmaus girls tennis coach, you wouldn't blame Kelly Musselman for not expecting too much out of her team in 2012.

Well, surprise.

Musselman's squad is now 7-3 on the season opening a lot of eyes, including those of their coach.

"I'll be honest, our goal this season was to win more matches than last year," admitted Musselman. "At first, we were surprised when the wins started to add up. We now...

Youth driving field hockey

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

You don't have to know much about field hockey to know that if you outscore your first four opponents by a combined score of 35-0, you're going to win a lot of games. Of course, if you're following the Emmaus field hockey team, you know that they're used to winning a lot of games.

Offensively, Emmaus had an amazing week, outscoring Central Catholic and Nazareth two teams in the middle of the pack in LVC field hockey by combined scores of 18-0.

Against Central Catholic, it was...

Tough stretch begins

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

After the 38-7 Lehigh Valley Conference victory over Central Catholic last Friday night, Emmaus head coach Joe Bottiglieri didn't want to rejoice too much.

With a new and modified conference schedule this year, every week is a tough matchup. With two consecutive road games at Freedom this Friday night, and at Easton next weekend, Emmaus (3-0) will look to continue its current play that has lifted them to an undefeated mark.

The win over Central was the first for the seniors and...

Injuries hit girls soccer

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Emmaus girls soccer coach Rob Rooney's team is battling through a number of key injuries, but he's not using that as an excuse for his team's 2-3-1start, including 2-2-1 in the Lehigh Valley Conference.

The latest loss came in the Don Hunt Memorial Tournament played on Emmaus' home turf, when the Lady Hornets lost to Whitehall in a physical 3-1 game.

Whitehall players received two yellow cards during the game for their physical play, which was exactly the type of game that...

Campbell is off to a good start for Panthers

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

Alexa Campbell is coming off of a strong junior campaign in 2011 for the Pitt volleyball team.

She played in all 33 of the Panthers matches, and recorded career-highs in digs (260), service aces (26), assists (19) and block assists (5). So there isn't much else the senior outside hitter could accomplish, right?

So far in the young season, Campbell, a 2009 Emmaus graduate, has earned a place on the Pitt Invitational All-Tournament team and to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate...

Football team shoots for 3-0 start

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

Two shutouts and 75 unanswered points later, the Emmaus Green Hornets football team is 2-0 and tied atop the Lehigh Valley Conference with Easton and Nazareth.

A 40-0 dismantling of Germantown in Week 1, and a 35-0 rain-shortened game last Saturday afternoon, has the Green Hornets set to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2008. Emmaus has its sights set on the Vikings from Central Catholic, whom they haven't beat since a 17-14 decision in 08. Last year it was rather one-...

Boys soccer looks to overcome slow start

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

You couldn't really blame boys' soccer coach John Cari if he asked for a do-over on the start of the season.

Just three games into the year, Cari has seen his team get off to a 1-2 start which has included the team's 21-game home unbeaten streak come to an end, the first loss to Allen in 11 games and he has had to bench four starters for violating team policy.

The good news is that the team came back with a strong 11-0 drubbing of Dieruff for their first win of the season....

Field hockey team gets off to another strong start

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

If the first two games of the year are any indication, then the Emmaus field hockey team will be having a very good season.

Beating Allen and Dieruff by a combined score of 17-0 is a nice way to start the season, even though neither is considered a field hockey powerhouse.

The latest win, a 12-0 pounding of the Huskies, may have been just the type of victory that coach Sue Butz-Stavin was looking for from her team. Even though they handled an Allen team that came into the match...

Rooney gets milestone victory

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

It may have just seemed like business as usual when the Emmaus girls soccer team blasted the Dieruff Huskies 6-0 to win their second game of the season.

The victory, though, was something much bigger, as it provided head coach Rob Rooney with his 129th career win, making him the winningest coach in Emmaus girls soccer.

Looking back on his 129 wins, Rooney remembers a number of key games from his tenure that he is most proud of. The memories highlight an impressive career and a...
