Bacher places second in LVC

Emmaus cross country coach Dan Wessner told sophomore runner Katie Bacher to shoot for the top five at the Lehigh Valley Conference cross championships last week at Bethlehem Municipal. But Bacher surprised even herself when she took second place in 20:05 behind winner Mikayla Stoudt of Parkland.

For the tenth season in a row, Emmaus field hockey players were awarded gold medals as champions of the Lehigh Valley Conference.

Emmaus went through the regular season with a 14-0 mark in the LVC and an 18-0 mark overall. It went on to beat Northampton 9-1 in the conference semifinals and bea rival Parkland 5-0 in the finals last week.

Grant Schumaker's list of accomplishments on the golf course is longer than your average grocery list. And it just got longer.

The Emmaus High School senior can now a District 11 AAA Championship to his resume.

Last Tuesday afternoon Schumaker donned the district gold medal after beating Parkland's Chad Hess on their second playoff hole at Blue Ridge Country Club in Palmerton.

The Emmaus football team is enjoying a five-game winning streak after starting the season 0-2.

During this streak Andrew Davidson is enjoying a successful stretch of his own.

The junior tailback scored two touchdowns last Friday night, making it his fifth consecutive game with at least one rushing touchdown, as Emmaus (5-1 LVC, 5-2 overall) defeated Liberty (2-4, 3-4) at East Penn School District Stadium 29-7 on homecoming.

In recent years Emmaus football has been known for its staunch defense while the offense has been more of a finesse unit.

Head coach Randy Cuthbert wants to make this a physical team on both sides of the ball.

"You have to be able to stop the run and you have to be able to run the ball," he said Monday night. "We are working on it right now and our guys are getting better. They are improving and it showed against Liberty. I think they are starting to buy into it."


Girls soccer sneaks into league playoffs

After a 2-1 loss to Central Catholic last week, the only way Emmaus was going to make the conference playoffs was if Northampton downed Nazareth that same night. Nazareth was heavily favored and figured to collect the win that would assure them of a playoff spot, but Northampton downed Nazareth 2-0 and Emmaus rebounded to beat Dieruff to put the Lady Hornets in and the Lady Eagles out of the LVC playoffs.

Things don't always work out as they're planned in sports, but in Monday's Lehigh Valley Conference volleyball semifinals, that certainly was the case.

Emmaus battled through some early struggles to knock off Bethlehem Catholic (25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-13) in four games, while Parkland moved through Central Catholic in a clean sweep to pair the two suburban rivals in tonight's LVC championship at Dieruff.

Only three girls golfer could move on from last week's District 11 Class AAA Tournament to this week's PIAA East Regional. And two of those three players are Emmaus High School students.

Kelsey Patterson carded an 84 and won this year's District 11 Class AAA championship, while Sam Fritzinger's 95 earned her third place.

With the soccer postseason here, the Emmaus boys are playing some of their best soccer at the right time of the season. The regular season ended with an eight-game winning streak that saw the Hornets outscore their opponents 32-4, sending Emmaus (14-3-1) into the LVC playoffs as the conference's top seed and assuring them of a strong seed once the district brackets are released as well.

After a win over Allen on Monday, Oct. 7, the Emmaus girls volleyball team moved one win away from clinching a spot in the Lehigh Valley Conference playoffs.
