Tuesday, July 2, 2013 by PETER CAR in HS Sports

Seven local seniors were named to the PIAA 3A and 2A all-state volleyball teams last week for the boys' season.

Bethlehem Catholic's Evan Blair (OH) and Bryan Brown (setter) both were named to the 2A team, while Emmaus' Gabe Shankweiler (OH), Collin Stanton (OH), Nazareth's Galin Swigart (OH), Parkland's Michael Lewis (setter) and Whitehall's Nick Kuti (OH) rounded out the 3A contingent.

Emmaus' still holds postseason hopes

Tuesday, July 2, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in Sports

For the Emmaus Legion team, it's been a matter of too little, too late pretty much all season long. Sunday presented a perfect case-in-point when West Allentown jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Emmaus bats went to work mounting a comeback. In the end, Emmaus dropped an 8-5 decision.

"That's pretty much what we've been doing all season," said Emmaus coach Mike Anderson. "We can't do anything early in the game and then when we do start to hit, we're already in a hole."

Fick, Landis play in all-star game

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

Rivalries are a part of sports in every school.

One of Emmaus' biggest rivals has always been Parkland.

But for two Hornet football players who were playing their last high school game, all of that was set aside during last Thursday's McDonald's Lehigh Valley Football Classic at Nazareth's Andrew Leh Stadium.

Hornet defensive lineman Micah Fick and kicker Dalton Landis were members of the Red team, which was composed of players from Lehigh, Carbon, and Monroe counties....

Emmaus not far from playoff berth

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

If Emmaus could get pitching like it saw from Jonathan Arguello Sunday night against Coplay, things would be going much easier for the 4-7 team. Arguello threw a complete game, allowing just one unearned run, in a 6-1 win over Coplay at Community Park.

Unfortunately, Emmaus is low on pitching and has had to push some position players into duty on the mound. For Arguello, he's just adapted by keeping things simple for himself.

"I don't try to throw hard," said Arguello, who is...

Emmaus' Marcks pitches four innings; LV wins Carpenter Cup softball opener

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by KATIE McDONALD in HS Sports

Emmaus High School's Olivia Marcks pitched the final four innings in the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup softball team's 10-5 victory over Philadelphia Catholic's Carpenter Cup team on Monday at FDR Park in Philadelphia.

"I felt pretty good, but it's extra hot out," Marcks said. "I've played down south, and it's not even as bad down there as it is up here."

Marcks and the rest of the Lehigh Valley team got a reprieve as they were about to warm up for their second game of the double...

Barebo reaches district final at ND

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Charlie Barebo is coming off a successful baseball season at Notre Dame (Green Pond), playing for a team that finished second in District 11. Now, Barebo is spending his summer with the Emmaus Legion team, honing his craft even more.

"It was a great experience to play on a team that did that well," said Barebo, who will be a junior at Notre Dame next school year.

Living in the East Penn School District but attending Notre Dame is quite a commute for Barebo, but it's one that he...

Lower Mac tops WA

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

With just five regular season games remaining and a 7-6 record, it looks like Lower Macungie will qualify for the Lehigh Valley Legion playoffs. This past week consisted of five games, with Lower Mac going 3-2, including a hotly contested 6-3 win over West Allentown.

All-Star pitcher Tyler Sterkenberg (3-0) started against West Allentown and got hit around for three runs in the first inning before settling in. In fact, he settled in so well that his opponents had to think of some way...

Emmaus legion seeks respect

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

After just nine wins in the last two Lehigh Valley Legion seasons, Emmaus' first-year head coach Mike Anderson is looking to rebuild the program's once-proud tradition.

After struggling in the season's first two games, Emmaus has played five competitive games through Monday night's 4-2 loss to Northern Valley, but is still just 2-4 heading into Tuesday's doubleheader against Salisbury.

"It's a work in progress," said Anderson. "I've got some guys playing positions that don't...

Lower Mac waits for bats to heat up

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Through the first eight games of the Lehigh Valley Legion season, Lower Macungie manager Mark Sterkenberg believes that his team simply hasn't hit its stride. With a 4-4 record, the team sits in the middle of the pack one week before the league squares off against the Schuylkill-Berks League All-Stars in the annual competition.

"Right now, some of our big horses just aren't hitting," said Sterkenberg after his team dropped a 10-0 decision to Salisbury. "Once some of these guys start...

carpenter cup Lehigh Valley beats Delaware South

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 by PETER CAR in HS Sports

It was a torrid start for the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team Monday afternoon, as they torched Delaware South 11-3 in the opener of the 16-team tournament at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia.

The Lehigh Valley blew things open with a four-run third inning, helping them take a 5-0 lead into the fourth, which only ballooned following a two-run double by Tyler Buskirk to help build a 7-0 lead for the Lehigh Valley.

In total, the Lehigh Valley pelted Delaware South's pitching...
