Emmaus field hockey remains undefeated

Thursday, October 10, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

When the field hockey season started, you could pretty much figure that the road to the Lehigh Valley Conference championship would have to run through Memorial Field and things are playing out just as predicted.

At 15-0 overall and 12-0 in the LVC, Emmaus is again at the top of the standings as it prepares for next week's LVC tournament and beyond. While a recent 9-2 win over Northampton was good, coach Sue Butz-Stavin believes the Konkrete Kids exposed some things that need to be...

Emmaus wins fourth straight

Thursday, October 10, 2013 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in HS Sports

Two weeks ago Wyl Miller was held to only 36 yards rushing against Easton.

Saturday night against Northampton, Miller surpassed that total in three attempts.

The junior running back rushed for 132 yards on 10 carries and was instrumental in an Emmaus 49-28 victory over Northampton (0-5,0-6) at Nazareth's Andrew S. Leh Stadium that was more of a blowout than the score indicates.

Coming in to the game Miller needed only 86 rushing yards to amass 1,000 for his career and he...

Soccer win streak reaches six games

Thursday, October 10, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Emmaus boys soccer team stretched its win streak to six straight with a 3-1 win over Council Rock North Saturday. The team stands at 12-3-1 overall and 11-1-0 in the Lehigh Valley Conference as the season winds down and it prepares for the LVC playoffs that begin next Tuesday.

In the time leading up to the playoffs, coach John Cari has a short to do list for his team, but knows that there is still some work to be done.

"We need to sharpen up some things going into the...

Hornet harriers prepare for postseason

Saturday, October 5, 2013 by MIKE HAINES in HS Sports

It might be redundant to say a cross country season is more marathon than sprint. But it rings true for this year's Emmaus High School harrier teams, both of which have been improving all year and gearing up for the postseason.

The girls team headed into Tuesday's final regular season meet with a 7-1 record.

"We are where I expected to be," said head coach Dan Wessner.

Emmaus has a solid top two with sophomore Kate Bacher and senior Hannah Brosky, who finished 33rd and...

Defense limits unbeaten Easton to seven points

Saturday, October 5, 2013 by TYLER TRUMBAUER Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Easton Red Rovers entered their game against the Emmaus Green Hornets undefeated and averaging 36 points per game.

After it, neither of those statistics remained in tact.

Last Friday night at East Penn School District Stadium, Emmaus (3-2, 3-1) defeated Easton (4-1, 3-1) by a score of 14-7 in a very physical game in front of the largest crowd at EPSD Stadium this season.

Head coach Randy Cuthbert was pleased his team held the Red Rover offense to seven points.

Coach reaches another milestone

Saturday, October 5, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

What was one of the most dominating weeks for Emmaus field hockey wrapped up Monday night with coach Sue Butz-Stavin getting her 800th career win in a 12-0 romp over Freedom. Senior Ashley Moxey and freshman Meredith Sholder each scored four times in the win over Freedom.

The historic win came on the heels of a 2-1 win over powerful Penn Manor on Saturday night, a good 10-0 win over Bethlehem Catholic and an impressive 8-0 win over Liberty to start the week, which Butz-Stavin called...

Emmaus girls soccer looks for consistency

Saturday, October 5, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Emmaus girls picked up back-to-back shutouts this past week with a 3-0 win over Bethlehem Catholic and a 4-0 win over Freedom to move to 8-4-1 overall and 8-2-0 in the Lehigh Valley Conference.

While the wins helped to prove that Emmaus is one of the better teams in the LVC, they also helped prove that they can be inconsistent at times, thanks to a relatively weak effort in the win over Freedom.

"We think on any given day we can be the best team in the conference," said...

Emmaus' No. 2 doubles team captures LVC silver

Saturday, October 5, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in HS Sports

A week ago, Emmaus senior Katrina Guido couldn't have imagined how her run in the 2013 Lehigh Valley Conference Tennis Tournament would play out.

Her doubles partner during the regular season, Elise Van Orner, was held out of the tournament for health reasons that occurred during the team's match on Friday. Two days later, Guido found out she would pair up with junior Amy Yang as the Hornets' No. 2 doubles team in the league tournament.

The two had never played together.

Butz-Stavin is approaching 800th win

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Whenever you take a new job, you never know exactly how successful you'll be or how long you'll be in the position. That's especially true for coaches, because there are so many variables. For Sue Butz-Stavin, her job has lasted 38 years now and she coached in her 900th game recently, which turned out to be a 5-0 win over the Nazareth Blue Eagles.

Truth is though, that Butz-Stavin almost didn't become the Emmaus field hockey coach, and in fact, turned it down at first when she was...

Emmaus suffers first loss

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

The teams were motivated. The crowd was raucous. It was just another battle of cross-town rivals on the volleyball court. In a matchup of unbeatens, Parkland (9-0) was able to withstand some Emmaus (8-1) flurries and win in three sets 25-19, 25-20, and 25-13.

"The kids get so excited to play Parkland," said Emmaus head coach Gwen Millets. "In every sport it's such a big rivalry. But my girls get so excited to where they're minds are going a mile a minute, and it's hard for them to...
