Hornets fall to Allen in OT

Thursday, February 6, 2014 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

The Emmaus boys basketball team has been on a roll since the holiday break. Since a loss to Central Catholic back on December 20, the Green Hornets (14-5 overall, 8-4 Lehigh Valley Conference) have won 11 of their next 12 games.

That run came to a sudden, abrupt hault last Friday night at the Hive.

Allen senior Isaiah Palmer drained a three-pointer as time expired to give the Canaries (12-7 overall, 8-4 LVC) a dramatic and big 47-44 win in the league standings. The loss is...

High school can be tough sometimes. There are a lot of pressures on kids and for student athletes, there is the added pressure of finding time to fit everything in and keep their grades strong enough to keep playing their sport. For senior Ivy Forstater, there has been an additional obstacle. Forstater was diagnosed with Dyslexia at a very young age and has had to battle to get through school.

Dyslexia, or developmental reading disorder, is a neurologic disorder that causes the brain...

Swim teams hold sr. night

Thursday, February 6, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Senior night in any sport is always special, but this year's event became very special for the Emmaus swimming and diving programs. Not only was a class of 12 seniors saluted for its accomplishments, but one of them set a team record. Added to that was the presentation of the Lehigh Valley Conference trophy to the boys team, which has clinched the title with a 9-0 record heading into the final two meets of the regular season.

The new record holder in one-meter diving for Emmaus is...

Girls need one more win

Thursday, February 6, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Getting that final win to put the Lady Hornets into the District 11 Tournament will have to wait. An opportunity was lost Saturday when Emmaus suffered a 49-47 loss to Liberty in the closing seconds and another opportunity was postponed Monday night when their game at Nazareth fell victim to snow.

The postponement with Nazareth was the third time that the game between the two teams has been postponed and was the sixth game this season that was postponed. The game is important because...

Smoker posts shut out

Thursday, January 30, 2014 by TODD KRESS in HS Sports

Emmaus goalkeeper Michael Smoker has been the anchor in goal all season for the Hornets.

But despite posting a 3.55 goals against average and 282 saves in 11 games heading into Monday night's matchup against Liberty/Southern Lehigh, there's one thing Smoker was still in search of this seasona shutout.

That all changed in the Hornets' most recent game.

Smoker, who recorded 19 saves Monday for the Hornets, provided solid goaltending all night as Emmaus (8-3-1) routed...

Girl basketball is taking season one game at a time

Thursday, January 30, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

You often hear coaches and players talk about taking the season one game at a time. That was one of the mantras that coach Billy Dunn had for his team coming into the season and he's stressing that now as the Hornets enter a critical stretch.

Even after being on the losing side of a 72-31 score against Bethlehem Catholic, Dunn was quick to point out that the loss was just one game on a 22-game schedule and that you need to take the highs and lows in stride.

"This is one-twenty-...

Hornets beat Beca, 78-72

Thursday, January 30, 2014 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

It was evident from the end of the first quarter that last Friday night's boys basketball game between Emmaus and Bethlehem Catholic was going to be high-scoring, at least for one team.

The Green Hornets (12-4 overall, 6-3 Lehigh Valley Conference) led 22-11 after the first eight minutes and once again used their tenacious defense to force Golden Hawks turnovers in winning their tenth of their last 11 games, 78-72 at Emmaus high school.

"It's a great feeling," said sophomore...

EHS wrestlers to face Nazareth

Thursday, January 30, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

Even before Emmaus went into its season-ending match with Parkland, the team knew exactly where it would be ranked for the District 11 Team Duals that are coming up later this week. Because the match against Parkland was postponed by bad weather and couldn't be made up by this past weekend's district deadline, the bout didn't figure into the seeding for district team duals.

"It's been kind of tough, because with the weather and the crazy rivalry match-ups in the last week, you have no...

Wrestlers wrap up productive week

Thursday, January 23, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

All-in-all, it was a productive week for Emmaus wrestling. First came a pretty easy Lehigh Valley Conference win over Allen by a 53-18 score. Then, the Hornets (7-5, 3-3) put up a strong 3-2 performance at the Garden Spot Hecker Duals picking up wins over Upper Darby, Waynesboro and LaSalle College.

At the Hecker Duals, the meet of the day came between Emmaus and LaSalle College High School, winners of five straight Philadelphia Catholic League titles.
