Volleyball holds on for win over Nazareth

Wednesday, October 1, 2014 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

The Emmaus volleyball team was put in a hole, one that it had to climb out of desperately. Coming off a conference loss to Central Catholic 3-2 just three days before, the Green Hornets again were challenged in the East Penn Conference.

The Nazareth Blue Eagles came out like their season was on the line, and played every point hard and to the whistle.

Nazareth took game one and played with a lot of energy in almost winning every game, but Emmaus would not go down for a second...

Hurricanes storm back, beat Hornets

Wednesday, October 1, 2014 by PETER CAR in HS Sports

It was a second-half display that gave Liberty and Emmaus coaches opposite reactions following last Friday night's 42-33 victory by the Hurricanes at Frank Banko Field.

Emmaus (2-3) saw a 27-14 lead with 9:53 left in the third quarter evaporate over the next 22 minutes en route to stifling defeat, but a joyous victory for the Hurricanes (3-2).

For Emmaus head coach Randy Cuthbert, the result was frustrating as they come when you're holding a second half lead.

Emmaus wins EPC golf titles

Wednesday, October 1, 2014 by TODD KRESS in HS Sports

Kevin Caverly's round at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Golf Championships didn't start how he had hoped.

After a bogey on his first hole, Caverly's ball found the water twice on the next hole, where he three-putted for a six-over par through two holes.

But from that point on, Caverly's round was as impressive as any golfer in the competition.

Caverly, who shot a one-over par over the final 16 holes, finished with a 7-over-par 79 and a third-place finish. He was one...

Wednesday, October 1, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

It's been a nice week for both the boys and girls soccer teams at Emmaus.

The boys continued their roll and clinched the Skyline Division title in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference with a 2-0 win over Nazareth, upping their record to 13-0-1. Meanwhile, the girls picked up the big win they needed, blanking Whitehall 1-0 and gaining some revenge against the Lady Zephyrs for last season's first-round game in districts.

Parker Landis and John Fritz both scored against Nazareth...

Field hockey gets in position for playoffs

Wednesday, October 1, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

There are currently nine field hockey teams with winning records in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and five of them are in the Skyline Division, with Emmaus leading the group at 9-0-1. The only other unbeaten team is Stroudsburg, which leads the Mountain Division with a 9-0 record in conference play.

Emmaus added a big 4-0 conference win against Whitehall (7-2-1) last week on the strength of three goals from sophomore Meredith Sholder. The win gave Emmaus a little margin for...

Wang, Xue reach doubles semifinal

Thursday, September 25, 2014 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in HS Sports

The young Emmaus girls tennis team went into the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament not really knowing what to expect. In the end, they walked away with a doubles team in the semifinals and another coming up just short.

The doubles tandem of senior Justine Wang and junior Katie Xue came in fourth in the No. 4 doubles bracket, dropping the consolation match for third place to a team from Central Catholic by a 10-3 score.

Two freshmen, Xinyi He and Tina Zhang competed in...

Boney runs for 191 yards in victory

Thursday, September 25, 2014 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in HS Sports

It may have been too early in the season to say it, but last Friday night's game at Nazareth was seemingly a must-win game for Emmaus. Having lost their last two games, the Hornets were searching for some momentum and a signature win that could propel them forward.

Emmaus (2-2 overall) used its rushing attack to build a lead against the Blue Eagles and then held on to defeat Nazareth 34-27 at Andrew Leh Stadium last Friday night.

"Right now, we're not talking about records or...

Hornet girls harriers take ninth at invitational

Thursday, September 25, 2014 by TODD KRESS in HS Sports

A season ago, the Emmaus girls' cross country team rode a wave of success to a second-place finish in the District XI Class AAA Cross Country Championships.

And while one of the Hornets' top runners has graduated in Hanna Brosky, four of last year's top five runners return in 2014. That group has picked up right where it left off.

Junior Katie Bacher, last year's fifth-place finisher at districts, finished as Emmaus' top girls runner in leading the Lady Hornets to a top-ten...

The Emmaus boys soccer team continues to roll, upping its overall record to 10-0-1 on the season with a pair of wins over Pleasant Valley and East Stroudsburg South over the past week.

The two wins also give the Hornets a streak of five straight shutouts and increases their scoring advantage over opponents to 35-4 on the season.

The Hornets have a comfortable lead over the rest of their division, with Nazareth sitting at 6-1 and Parkland at 6-3 on the year. Beyond that,...
