Robert Bishop, a junior at Emmaus High School, is a finalist in the 2013 Penn State Writing Contest.

Every year, the Pennsylvania State University Program in Writing and Rhetoric recognizes three winners and 17 finalists for their writing.

The winners and finalists were chosen from 75 excellent student writers identified by high schools across the state.

To the Editor:

Five seconds that's all it takes. Looking at one text can be the difference between life and death. Five seconds of inattentiveness while going 60 mph is equivalent to closing your eyes and driving 100 feet.

Vehicle accidents are the number one killer in people aged 15 to 20. The National Safety Council estimates 28 percent of all recorded traffic crashes, 1.6 million crashes a year, involve drivers texting.

Expanded Anderson ER to open April 1

Pending the results of a March 25 inspection by the Pa. Department of Health, officials at the St. Luke's Anderson Campus are projecting that a $4 million expansion of the facility's emergency department will be operational beginning April 1.

Lehigh Carbon Community College, 4500 Education Park Drive, Schnecksville, is offering "Running for Life" for youngsters ages 8-12 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. April 10 through May 29 at LCCC's main campus.

Students will learn good nutrition and track their exercise and healthy snacking in a journal.

Kids are asked to wear comfortable clothes, sneakers, and to bring a water bottle.

There is a materials fee for the journal, along with a course fee.

The society was formed to preserve and maintain the historic Shelter House which was built circa 1734.
