Golden Age Card available for seniors

East Penn School District residents age 65 and older may apply for the Golden Age Card. This complimentary pass entitles the holder to free admission to all plays, concerts, track usage, home sports events and other special events sponsored by the school district including a Thanksgiving luncheon.

The Lehigh Valley Health Network will hold marathons and a walk to benefit VIA Sept. 8 and 9 from Allentown to Easton via Bethlehem. Late registration is open until Aug. 26.

There will be family fun walks and other events beginning 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Arts Quest Center, 101 Founder's Way. The race opening ceremonies and marathons begin 6:40 a.m. at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest and I-78, Allentown, Sept. 9.

The tradition of soap box racing continues in Emmaus

Amateur racers from around the country will gather in Emmaus to compete in the "Summer Classic" Aug. 25 and 26.

The public is invited to come watch the Emmaus soap box derby's storied tradition of downhill racing continue beginning 7 a.m. both days.

Zionsville youth thankful for summer journey on historic schooner

Shawn Merrill Jr., of Zionsville, was one of 14 students selected to sail the high seas for an educational journey on an historic schooner.

Merrill was able to join the summer crew of the Roseway by writing an essay and submitting in an application to the World Ocean School, Maine.

The students traveled from Boston to Nova Scotia stopping in Shelburne, Halifax and Lunenburg on a three-mast 137-foot sailboat built in 1925 as a fishing vessel.

Community Services for Children's 2012 Children's Ball will be held 6 to 11 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Lehigh Country Club, 2319 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Allentown.

Proceeds will support the "Building a SafeStart for Babies" campaign. The SafeStart program's treatment facility, Donley Family Center for Infants, provides daily therapy for babies who have been abused and neglected. It is the only such treatment program in Pennsylvania.
