Former Police K-9 'Ajax' remembered for contributions to community

Emmaus Police Department Chief David Faust has announced the passing of former Police K-9 Ajax.

K-9 Ajax was a male German Shepherd imported from the Czech Republic and was handled by K-9 Officer Craig J. Blose.

Faust said Ajax was cross-trained for patrol duties and narcotics. He dutifully served the Emmaus Police Department for seven years, six months having retired from active duty with honor in 2009. He died June 18.

Faust said since 1990, the Emmaus Lions Club has purchased every police dog for the borough, including Ajax.

The Alburtis senior citizens are meeting at the Alburtis Rod and Gun Club, 3818 Gun Club Road, noon Aug. 15. All Alburtis senior residents are welcome to attend.

The borough office will be closed for Labor Day, Sept. 3.

The centennial committee meets at borough hall 6 p.m Sept. 6 to discuss plans for the 2013 Alburtis Centennial Celebration. The meeting is open to all Alburtis residents.

UPPER MILFORD SUPERVISORS Pension company challenges board decision

A pension administration company has filed an objection to Upper Milford Township supervisors' decision last month to select Municipal Retirement Trust as provider of pension services to the township.

Integrated Capital Management filed the objection, arguing that Municipal Retirement Trust, in its proposal, didn't correctly calculate its costs for serving the township.

Township solicitor Marc Fisher told supervisors at their Aug. 2 meeting he is reviewing their objections and will have a decision at the next board meeting on the validity of those objections.

The Emmaus Special Entertainment Commission, Hosfeld Insurance and InsuranceChix.com will present a free Songs of Summer event in the Emmaus Community Park Arts Pavilion from 7 to 9 p.m.

Aug. 15

The Emmaus Historical Society will host an antique appraisal program 4 to 8 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 5th and Chestnut streets. There will be five certified appraisers and participants can pre-register by calling 610-966-6591 by Aug. 3.

Macungie realtor, family spotlighted on HGTV 'House Hunters'

A Macungie realtor and a local family were featured on a recent episode of the Home and Garden Television show "House Hunters."

Realtor Lisa Graul-Oswald of Prudential Patt, White Real Estate and her buyers, Jon and Stacy Puliatte starred in the episode that put Macungie on the map.

Their episode was entitled "No Time for Projects in Pennsylvania."

The process began long before the air date, Oswald's broker suggested she submit an application for the television show.

MACUNGIE BOROUGH COUNCIL Resignations topic of interest to residents, council members

A council member who may resign, an office staff member who will resign and a police officer who has resigned led the discussions at Macungie Borough Council's meeting Aug. 6.

Linn Walker, who has served on council since last year, was expected to announce his resignation but was not in attendance at the meeting. To date, Borough Manager Chris Boehm had had no written communication from Walker regarding his pending decision to resign from any or all of his municipal services which include the Planning Commission and the Borough Authority.

Ryan Spear, 40, of Easton, was arrested for DUI on Kings Highway approximately .25 miles south of Beck Road, Upper Milford Township, 10:18 p.m. July 20. Spear was allegedly under the influence when his vehicle impacted a utility pole. The pole had a split in it and was laying in the northbound lane as a result of the accident.

Jose Contreras, 18, of Allentown, was arrested for DUI on Interstate 78 eastbound at exit 57, Allentown, 1:04 p.m. July 29. Contreras was allegedly found to be under the influence during a traffic stop.

EMMAUS MAIN STREET PARTNERS Partnership with GLVCC being negotiated

The Emmaus Main Street Partners and The Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce are negotiating an agreement to partner as part of the Main Street Initiative of the chamber.

"It is a honor for us," President and CEO of The Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Tony Iannelli said. "The EMSP has a phenominal track record."

Iannelli said they have been talking with EMSP for approximately 10 years and more seriously over the last two years, hoping to join forces together.
