LEHIGH COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Funding increased to support public defender, district attorney, coroner

The Lehigh Valley Commissioners augmented funding to the offices of public defender, district attorney and county coroner at their meeting Aug. 22. According to Commissioner Percy Dougherty, crimes including homicide are up in the Lehigh Valley.

"The number of cases the public defender handles has increased drastically," Dougherty said. "It's almost guaranteed that the public defender is going to be back to us for more funding by the end of the year."

Rubber Ducky Derby raises money for National Multiple Sclerosis Society

An afternoon filled with fun, rubber ducks, carnival games, music, face painting, basket raffle, dunk tank and food was held at Emmaus Community Park Aug. 11 to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society courtesy of Lynette Heminitz.

Heminitz, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007, said she wants to do as much as she can and raise as much money as she can while she can still walk and is still able.

"My goal was to raise $5,000 this year," Heminitz said.

East Penn postpones eliminating busing to Willow Lane Elementary students

The East Penn School District has postponed eliminating busing for certain students attending Willow Lane Elementary School for the 2012-2013 school year.

With the exception of children residing in Brandywine Village II, the district will continue busing students until the start of the 2013-2014 school year.

The East Penn School District held an informational meeting for parents and guardians of students residing in Brandywine Village II.

Queen City Airport is site for Scout aviation badge

The Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority, partnering with PennDOT aviation officials, held a three-day aviation and youth activity as part of the department's National Aviation Day celebrations held Aug. 18 through 20 at 11 airports statewide.

The event, now in its third year in Pennsylvania, offers students the opportunity to participate in activities designed to meet Scouting aviation badge requirements, learn about aviation and share in the 74th annual nationwide celebration.

Q: What are the benefits of breast-feeding for the baby?

A: There are many benefits of breast-feeding for babies. Just a few of them are: decreased allergies, decreased ear infections, decreased risk of obesity, decreased risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, decreased risk of several cancers, decreased risk of juvenile diabetes and increased IQ. Preterm babies who receive breast milk have better survival rates and fewer of the complications common to preterm babies. In addition to the health benefits to infants, breastfeeding increases the bonding of mothers and babies.
