ALBURTIS BOROUGH COUNCIL Budget approved with no increase in taxes

On Dec. 26, Alburtis Borough Council approved the borough budget for 2013 and adopted Ordinance 508 setting the real estate tax at 3.08 mills for 2013 with no increase in per capita tax, earned income tax, local services tax, realty transfer tax, sewer, water or garbage fees for 2013.

To set a three percent raise and benefits for maintenance and other employees, council adopted Ordinance No. 509.

Council adopted Resolution No. 2012-8 to appoint France, Anderson and Basile, P. C. the independent auditor for the borough for fiscal year 2013.

EMMAUS FIRE DEPARTMENT Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. grant provides equipment

"This donation is being used to provide much-needed equipment that will enable the Emmaus Fire Department to enhance the safety of our firefighters as we provide our services to the community," EFD Chief James Reiss told representatives from the Bethlehem office of the Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. at a symbolic check presentation last week.

The donation of more than $12,000 from the insurance company's Heritage program was used to purchase a variety of equipment that would not have been able to be obtained with the fire department's limited operating funds.

Alburtis volunteer firefighters hold open house

Alburtis Volunteer Fire Department recently held their annual open house educating citizens about some of the situations they regularly encounter.

Fire safety demonstrations were given throughout the day including extinguishing a live grease fire, putting out a Christmas tree fire and executing a rooftop rescue. They also showed an automobile rescue using the Jaws of Life and home safety demonstrations in the "Family Safety House" portable trailer.

EHS EHS determined safe after thorough sweep

According to Community Liaison Nicole Bloise, Emmaus High School received a bomb threat Dec. 20 specific to the Emmaus High School building for Friday, Dec. 21. In order to ensure the safety of staff and students, EHS was closed Friday. Law enforcement officials were dispatched to search and sweep the building. All other district buildings were in session. In addition, all EHS day/evening activities were cancelled for Friday.

Alburtis Borough Council President Steve Hill announced there will be no increase in taxes, water and sewer or garbage fees in Alburtis in 2013.

"The police department, secretary and maintenance have all been under budget this year. Everyone is really watching their spending," Hill said.
