Checkup to detect cancer

Tuesday, September 17, 2013 by FRED CICETTI Special to The Press in Focus

Q. When seniors gather, it doesn't seem to take long before we get to our aches and pains. You must get more than your share of that.

My friend, Pete, has instituted a "colonoscopy rule." He insists that, if a bunch of us geezers are talking about aches, maladies and visits to the doctors, everyone has to change the subject as soon as someone uses the word colonoscopy. Usually, we switch to grandchildren, which is a lot more fun.

But, while we are on the subject of colons ......

Lake Bell in 'World' of her own

Tuesday, September 17, 2013 by PAUL WILLISTEIN in Focus

"In A World ... "

You may have heard that phrase, intoned by Don LaFontaine at the beginning of movie previews, or trailers, as they are known.

LaFontaine, who died in 2008, was dubbed "the voice of God" for his recordings of more than 5,000 film trailers, and thousands of television commercials, network promotions and video game trailers.

LaFontaine parodied his own career in TV commercials for Geico Insurance and the "Mega Millions" lottery game.

Tuesday, September 17, 2013 by The Press in Focus

Although botanically the name "Daffodil" refers to only a small portion of the genus narcissus, it has become a well-accepted common name for all types of narcissus.

Daffodils are easy to grow and reliable, and their early flowering make them one of the more popular spring bulbs. And, because they contain poisonous alkaloids, they are not damaged by deer or other wildlife.

The life cycles of spring-flowering bulbs begin in the fall when roots are formed. The flowers and foliage...

It's the domino effect for Derek Trucks

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 by PAUL WILLISTEIN Focus Editor in Focus

You might not have been surprised if Derek Trucks had named his band Derek and the Dominos.

After all, his parents named him after the Eric Clapton rock band, which released the 1970 landmark album, "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs," with Duane Allman playing slide guitar, Trucks says in a recent phone interview from the road during his tour.

And in the domino effect that happens in the world of rock 'n' roll, Derek became a blues guitar prodigy at age nine, playing public...
