Hometown Hero honored by granddaughter at PPL Center Center

Skylar L. Gutman, a sophomore at Parkland High School, had the honor of singing to her grandfather Matt “Mathias” Francis Gutman at a recent Phantoms Hockey game at PPL Center, Allentown.

The World War II veteran, who lives in Lower Macungie Township with his wife Arlene, was honored as a “Hometown Hero” Dec. 16, 2015.

He returned to the PPL Center recently to be honored once again and have his granddaughter sing “God Bless America” by his side, said Kathy Gutman, Skylar’s mother.

Stagemakers to perform ‘Mary Poppins’ at JCC

Stagemakers Youth Theater students will perform “Mary Poppins” Feb. 11, 13 and 14 at the Jewish Community Center of the Lehigh Valley, Allentown.

“Mary Poppins” set in London, England, tells the story of a magical English nanny who is blown by an East wind to 17 Cherry Tree Lane and into the lives of George and Winifred Banks and their children.

This two-act musical is based on a series of children’s books written by P.L. Travers and the 1964 Walt Disney film.

There are two different casts: the Jubilee Cast and the Piccadilly Cast.

S.W. police investigate 'swatting' incident

Several area police departments responded just after midnight July 22 to the area of 931 Glick Ave., South Whitehall, for a report of a shooting with injuries.

South Whitehall police say first responding officers determined the resources and personnel of the Lehigh County Municipal Emergency Response Team should be called.

As the incident evolved and additional information was obtained, the incident was determined to be a hoax, referred to as "swatting," police say.

St. Luke's unveils new mammography unit and SensorySuite

St. Luke's University Health Network recently unveiled its new 3D mammography system and SensorySuite at its St. Luke's West End Medical Center in South Whitehall Township.

Dr. Joseph Russo, chief of Woman's Imaging at St. Luke's University Health Network, said this new 3D mammography unit is the newest weapon in the health network's arsenal against fighting breast cancer.

"It's a new screening tool used especially for women with dense breasts," Russo said. "The population we need to do a better job at are our dense breast patients and 3D addresses that."

Schmoyer awarded medal for patriotism

Carl F. Schmoyer III of Breinigsville was recently honored at the 118th annual conference of the Pennsylvania State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center, Fogelsville.

Schmoyer, who almost 12 years ago with his family initiated a massive Fourth of July fireworks display in Breinigsville Park, for Lehigh Valley residents, was presented the Ellen Hardin Walworth Founders Medal for Patriotism by Pennsylvania State Regent Roberta "Bobbi" McMullen.

Zion's UCC salutes Honorary First Defenders

The Allentown chapter of the Honorary First Defenders was recently honored during a commemorative service at Zion's "Liberty Bell" United Church of Christ, Allentown.

The service, featuring choral music from the popular musical "Shenandoah," and the Civil War reenactors' color guard from the 96th Pennsylvania Regiment, was based on the soldiers' prayer books from the Civil War.

Group to place wreaths on veterans' graves

Kris Smith and members of the Employee Value Team of CryoMachinery from Air Products and Chemicals Inc., are having a Wreaths Across America ceremony noon Dec. 13 at Grandview Cemetery, 2735 Walbert Ave., South Whitehall.

Immediately following the short remembrance ceremony, a laying of wreaths will take place.

Wreaths Across America was started in 1992 by Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath in Harrington, Maine.

The mission of the nonprofit charity is to "Remember, Honor and Teach."

Theater students follow the 'Yellow Brick Road'

Theater students from the Allentown Jewish Community Center recently performed the musical "The Wizard of Oz."

This two-act musical tells the story of Dorothy Gale from Kansas, who is separated from her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry Gale during a tornado.

As she tries to find her way back home through Munchkinland, a cornfield, apple orchard and forest, she meets a scarecrow without a brain, tin man without a heart and a cowardly lion.

This musical was based on the original motion picture "The Wizard of Oz," from the book by L. Frank Baum.
