ASPCA commercials tug at the heart and the purse strings

Animal cruelty, unfortunately, exists but a number of organizations are bringing the issue to the forefront and available to assist when needed.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have seen the ASPCA commercials on television spotlighting abused animals and asking for your monetary assistance in continuing their work.

The familiar song by Sarah McLachlan, "In the Arms of the Angel," is just one of the songs on an ASPCA commercial; you know what the commercial is about if you hear that song playing.

Robert L. Lindenmuth, 91, of Emmaus, died January 13, 2013, in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of the late Bette G. (Minnich) Lindenmuth.

He was a truck driver for Modern Transfer for 25 years, retiring in 1983. Previously, he worked for Reading Railroad for many years. After retiring, he worked part time at John Monahan Real Estate and Weis Markets.

He was a World War II veteran and served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army.

He was passionate about golf and was still active in his pool league.

Donald L. Gambler, 63, of Allentown, formerly of Alburtis, died January 13, 2013, in Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital, Allentown. Born in Alburtis, he was a son of the late Paul W. and Catherine R. (Szilli) Gambler.

He was a member of Zion Lehigh Lutheran Church, Alburtis.

He is survived by brothers, Gerald G. and his wife Roxann E. (O'Brien), of Alburtis, and Ronald R. and his wife Paulette E. (Fenstermaker), of Fogelsville; sister-in-law, Carol S. (Conrad), wife of the late Paul K., of Promised Land.

Dr. William G. Bartholo-mew, 96, formerly of Emmaus, a lifelong educator who served as the first executive director of the Carbon-Lehigh Intermediate Unit and as a leader in the planning and formation of the Lehigh County Vocational Technical School and the Lehigh/Carbon Community College, died January 4, 2013, at Luther Crest Retirement Community in Allentown. He was the husband of the late Carrie (Paules) Bartholomew. He was born in West Catasauqua.
