Area student named to Dean's list
Caleb Hoffman, of Emmaus, was named to the Dean's list for the spring 2013 semester at Berklee College of Music, Boston, Mass.
Student awarded science degree
Ashanth Thomas, of Emmaus, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Villanova University. Graduation ceremonies took place in May.
Carol A. Kiefer, 61, of Emmaus, formerly of Blue Bell, and Los Gatos, Calif., died June 23, 2013, in her home. Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of Virginia L. (Olberding) Kiefer and the late Stephen H. Kiefer.
She graduated from Parkland High School and received a bachelor of science degree in computer science from Penn State University.
Richard N. Wirth, 65, of Macungie, died June 27, 2013, in the Inpatient Hospice Unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. He was the husband of Carol J. (Rudy) Wirth. They celebrated 42 years of marriage. Born in Allentown, he was the son of Norman C. and the late Mary V. (Moll) Wirth.
He was employed at Air Products and Chemicals for 33 years until retiring as operations manager in the IT department.
He was an Air Force veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife; father; daughter, Carolyn; sister, Barbara and her husband Richard Spangler.
Leadership Lehigh Valley, which identifies and trains emerging leaders from the region, is now accepting applications for the September 2014 program.
The group will explore personal and community issues and broaden participants' knowledge of the greater Lehigh Valley during the monthly sessions.
LLV graduates find placement on a broad spectrum of the region's nonprofit boards, providing strategic direction, financial oversight and philanthropic support in health care, education, social services, environmental and arts organizations.
Karen A. Gillespie, 60, of Emmaus, died July 11, 2013, in the Phoebe Home, Allentown. She was the longtime companion of Kevin D. Zotter. Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marita (Mulhall) Gillespie.
She was a graduate of Hazleton General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of '73, and Hazleton High School, Class of '71.
She was a registered nurse having worked at the Berwick Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital, Hazleton.
Elizabeth "Betsie" G. Kunkel, 62, of Wescos-ville, died July 11, 2013, in the Le-high Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. She was the wife of Henry C. Kunkel. They were married for 38 years. Born in Pittsford, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Norman N. and Elizabeth (Hallock) Gurley.
She was a member of Nativity Lutheran Church, Allentown, where she was a member of the choir and bell choir. She was a former member of Baleville Congregational Church, Newton, N.J., where she was a choir member and Ladies Aid.
The Wilhelm Brothers will perform 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at Allentown Public Library, 1210 Hamilton St., Allentown.
This Asheville, N.C. group combines the singer, songwriter talents of Chris Wilhelm with the sonic beauty and skill of cellist Cristof Ensslin.
Their sound emphasizes love of a good story delivered in song and employs folk, roots and indie influences.

Rain did not hamper the fifth grade picnic at Shoemaker Elementary School recently. The students all got a turn trying to dunk the principal and the police chief. The event was moved inside the school, where a disc jockey provided music for dancing later in the day due to inclement weather.
