Semifinalists named

Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million offered next spring.

Local students receive scholarships

Ai Orthodontics, Emmaus, awarded two $750 scholarships to students in the area. The scholarships were awarded to Theodor Swanson, a graduate of Emmaus High School, and Alana Harrington, a graduate of Northwestern Lehigh High School.

Swanson is the son of Marc and Caryn Swanson, of Macungie.

Harrington is the daughter of Patrick and Dolores Harrington, of New Tripoli.

The money for the scholarships was donated by the staff of Ai Orthodontics as part of their Casual for A Cause Community Outreach Program.

East Penn postpones eliminating busing to Willow Lane Elementary students

The East Penn School District has postponed eliminating busing for certain students attending Willow Lane Elementary School for the 2012-2013 school year.

With the exception of children residing in Brandywine Village II, the district will continue busing students until the start of the 2013-2014 school year.

The East Penn School District held an informational meeting for parents and guardians of students residing in Brandywine Village II.

Lehigh Valley Zoo featured on 'The Browne Report'

A recent visit and tour of the Lehigh Valley Zoo, in Schnecksville, by Senator Pat Browne, R-16th, is featured during this month's installment of "The Browne Report" television show.

Browne was afforded the opportunity to see everything the Lehigh Valley Zoo has to offer for people of all ages as he took a walking tour through the zoo.

Led by Richard Molchany, president and CEO of the Lehigh Valley Zoo, Browne learned about the history of the zoo, which started as the Trexler Game Preserve back in 1906, as well as the changes and advancements the zoo has made over the years.

Emmaus woman receives citizen crime protection volunteer recognition award

An Emmaus woman who has been a longtime advocate of crime protection and has served on numerous boards and task forces in the Lehigh Valley and other states recently received a state award for lifelong service to the community.

At a ceremony recently in Harrisburg, Judith Lieberman, 92, was one of 10 people given the 2012 Governor's Citizen Crime Protection Volunteer Recognition Award.

Lieberman was nominated by Pennsylvania State Trooper Marc Allen of Troop M, Bethlehem.
