Andrews, Smoker lead hockey team to win

Wednesday, January 14, 2015 by CJ HEMERLY in HS Sports

The scoreboard after the final whistle showed 63 shots on goal for the losing team, but just 23 for the winning team. That stat line summed up the quality over quantity in the 8-4 win that Emmaus/Pleasant Valley had over the Diocese team last Monday night at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena.

The Green Hornets made the most of their shots, while the Diocese team, which is made up of players from Central Catholic, Bethlehem Catholic, and Notre Dame (Green Pond) couldn't get enough past Hornet senior goalie Michael Smoker.

There were some notable streaks snapped last Tuesday night at Emmaus High School. In a back-and-forth affair which saw big leads evaporate for both teams, Emmaus lost a big advantage and then fought back to take down Allen in another classic between the two teams.

The victory ended a four game-losing streak for the Green Hornets, and snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Canaries.

Parkland's athleticism too much for Hornets

Wednesday, January 7, 2015 by CJ HEMERLY in HS Sports

Emmayus boys basketball head coach Steve Yoder knew before the season started that he wanted to challenge his team and play against good competition. Through the last four games, he has seen just that.

The Green Hornets came off their first ever trip to the Mirabito Stop-DWI Holiday Classic in Binghamton, NY, during the weekend in between Christmas and New Years with three losses in three games to top-level teams.

EHS takes second at Zephyr Duals

Although the Emmaus wrestling team has started off the year slow, with a 3-4 record, the Hornets last two dual meets each of the past two weekends have shown just what they can do in 2015.

Coming off a team championship two weeks ago at the Trojans Wars dual meet at Chambersburg High School, Emmaus wrestled in the Zephyr Duals at Whitehall High School, along with 14 other teams last Saturday.

Big fourth quarter pushes Hornets to win

Wednesday, December 24, 2014 by CJ HEMERLY in HS Sports

The Emmaus boys basketball team was having a tough time with Stroudsburg.

The two teams traded leads 15 different times over the course of the first three quarters before a dominating 32-point fourth quarter propelled the Green Hornets to a 68-50 win over the Mounties last Tuesday night at Emmaus High School.

It was the fourth game in five days for Emmaus, and the Hornets went 3-1 in that span.

Joey Polcynski opened up the scoring with a dunk in transition and the Green Hornets looked to be starting off fast, but Stroudsburg answered every basket with one of its own.

Numbers are up for Hornet wrestling

The Emmaus wrestling team fell in the opening round of the District 11 tournament to defending champion Nazareth, but with a large group back with a lot of post season experience, the Green Hornets will look to improve on their 2013-14 season and advance further as a team and individually.

Sophomores Tyler Corpora, Justis Walton, Jacob Alcaro, Jared Skibinski, and Colin Molitorisz, juniors Lucas Schaf and Dan Oberle, and seniors Cole Franklin, Austin Flaugh, and Tom Alcaro all return after qualifying for districts a year ago,

Boys basketball falls in season opener

Wednesday, December 10, 2014 by CJ HEMERLY in HS Sports

Emmaus boys basketball head coach Steve Yoder knew it was going to be tough in the first week or two of the season, but he didn't think it would be as tough as Saturday's game against Liberty.

A couple of missed free throws and some failed layups were too much to overcome a late comeback effort, as Emmaus (1-0) fell in its opener to Liberty last Saturday night at Liberty High School.

It was the first official game of the new Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, as some of the other games in the 11th annual Yasso-Rothrock tournament were not considered league contests.

Boys hoops returns 12 juniors

Finally, the big class that boys basketball head coach Steve Yoder has been raving about is upperclassmen.

Twelve juniors make up 80 percent of the varsity roster for the Green Hornets. The group is led by forwards Joey Polczynski, Kevin Wambold and Brandon Rapose, who each saw their share of valuable playing time last year on a team that won 18 games last year and made it to the District 11 finals, also qualifying for the state tournament.

EHS falls to Parkland in title game

Last Thursday night in the District 11 final at Whitehall High School, the Emmaus girls volleyball team looked across the court and saw a familiar opponent. One that the Hornets have seen many times in big games this year and in years past.

In 2013, the Green Hornets were able to take down Parkland in the semifinals of the district tournament. This year the two teams matched up in the final.

It was also the fourth time the rivals squared off this season, the most recent coming in the inaugural Eastern Pennslvania Conference final two weeks ago.

Trojans are too much in regular season finale

Wednesday, November 5, 2014 by CJ HEMERLY in HS Sports

It was just a little over a week ago that the Emmaus football team had hopes for a spot in the District 2-11 Class AAAA subregional tournament. But a disappointing 48-41 loss to Whitehall in week 9 seriously hurt those chances.

Heading into their season finale, the Green Hornets were looking to take any kind of momentum into the playoffs.
