Field hockey opens season with victory over Nazareth
If their opening game is any indication, it’s going to be another big season for Emmaus field hockey. The Lady Hornets downed Nazareth 11-0 to open the season with an East Penn Conference win.
Emmaus jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first half and didn’t look back. Elizabeth Mazzella got the scoring underway with the first goal of the season for Emmaus. Annika Herbine assisted on the goal and would later score a goal of her own.
After Abby Burnett added an unassisted goal, Mazzella picked up her second goal of the game with the assist going to Alexis Kociban. Madison Bruns and Kociban each added a first-half goal, with Ava Zerfass picking up an assist on Kociban’s goal. Burnett then added a second goal and Emmaus was well on its way to a rout of the Blue Eagles.
In the second half, Mazzella and Burnett each picked up a third goal in the game and Kociban added her second tally. Herbine and Maddie Huffer added goals in the second half to push the score to 11-0. All of the second half goals were unassisted.
The roster features just three seniors, highlighting the need for underclassmen to step up and provide scoring for the team. Emmaus got six of its goals from the freshman and sophomore classes of players.
Burnett, a freshman, scored three goals, while sophomores Kociban added two and Kociban scored one. Mazzella, a senior, also scored three goals on the day, while juniors Bruns and Herbine each finished with one goal in the season opener.
Emmaus plays at Allen on Thursday and then plays at Bethlehem Catholic Saturday before coming home to face Downingtown West on Monday.
