Emmaus tops Carbon, falls to Allentown

Thursday, June 27, 2019 by CHUCK HIXSON Special to the Press in Sports

The Emmaus American Legion baseball team had a reversal of fortunes in its last two games.

On Sunday, the Hornets put up late runs to blow out the Carbon Monarchs 15-6, but then dropped a 14-8 game to Allentown on Monday thanks to a 12-run fourth inning for Allentown.

Against Carbon, Emmaus had an eight-run inning in the top of the seventh to top its three-run sixth inning and put away the win. Down 6-4 coming into the sixth, Emmaus put runners on first and third with one out for Austin McEllroy, who lifted a fly ball to right, bringing home Colin Schaffer with the first run of the inning. A single and a walk loaded the bases and Brendon Ward came through with a two-run single to left to take Emmaus from a run down to a run ahead.

The Hornets were simply looking for an insurance run or two in the seventh, but turned it into much more. A leadoff single from Corby Bennett was followed by a sacrifice bunt by Schaffer to put a runner in scoring position. Matt Madigan singled and went to second on an error, while Bennett scored from second. Another Carbon error brought home Madigan and put Jimmy Braxmeier on second with one out. McEllroy singled and Stephen Bloodnick singled on a ball that was misplayed in right, bringing in another run and leaving runners on second and third. A fielder’s choice by Zane Cook made it 10-6 with two outs in the inning, but there was more to come.

Justin Rousenberger walked to load the bases and a walk, error and two hit batters forced across four more runs to complete the eight-run inning and leave Emmaus with a 15-6 lead and the Monarchs down to their last chance at the plate.

Carbon didn’t go very quietly in the seventh after two singles put runners on first and third with two outs. Drew Frank worked a walk off of McEllroy, who came on to pitch the seventh, which loaded the bases. McEllroy then got Noah Snisky to fly out to center to end the game.

Ward and McEllroy both had three hits for Emmaus and combined to drive in seven runs on the day. Two of McEllroy’s hits were doubles and were the only extra-base hits in the game for Emmaus. Braxmeier scored four runs and Madigan crossed the plate three times. On the mound, Braxmeier threw six innings for Emmaus before giving way to McEllroy for the seventh after Braxmeier had reached 103 pitches in his outing.

Against Allentown, Emmaus scored eight runs on just two hits, taking advantage of seven walks and three errors. The Emmaus pitching staff was touched for 14 hits and hurt by six Emmaus errors that led to four unearned runs in the game.

Braxmeier was 1-for-2 and scored two runs and the other hit came from John Cherhit, who scored a run and drove in a run for the Hornets.

Emmaus (3-6) and Lower Macungie (3-6) square off in a rivalry game on Thursday and the Hornets also play at Northern Valley (3-4) Friday and at Salisbury (4-3-1) on Monday. They return home on Tuesday to host South Parkland (8-0), the only undefeated team in the Lehigh Valley League.
