Grapplers take second at Becahi

Saturday, January 5, 2019 by STEPHEN ALTHOUSE Special to the Press in Sports

The Emmaus Green Hornets went into the 51st Annual Tony Iasiello Memorial Christmas City Wrestling Tournament at Bethlehem Catholic High School looking to offer a good performance. They left the two-day tournament Dec. 29 having done much more, earning a second-place team finish with 124.5 points, behind winner Bethlehem Catholic with 264 points.

“I think we did better than expected, which I’m happy to say,” said head coach Thad Smith. “We’re coming in here trying to place a few kids, but being second in the team race is a nice surprise. In a way maybe I shouldn’t be surprised because our kids work hard everyday to get better and the fact is they are getting better.”

Two wrestlers distinguished themselves with tough-as-nails performances. Freshman Nick Velde, wresting at 120, finished second overall. He lost to Blair Academy’s D.J. McGee in a fall in 3:10 seconds in the championship match.

Senior Caden Wright (170) also finished as a runner-up, losing to Edmond Ruth of Susquehanna Township 18-8. After the match, Smith tutored his young wrestler about what he did right and what could be done better.

“There’s winning and learning,” said Smith. “When you don’t win, you’ve got to learn from it and learn what we did well so that we can make it better next time. At the same time, we have to look at what we didn’t do well that we need to make better.”

Hornet senior Luigi Mannino (220) came up on the short end in his third-place match, losing to Roman Catholic’s Nick DeJohn 9-6. Three other Green Hornets - sophomore Kordell Waiters (126), senior Jackson Karrat (138) and freshman Jared Groller (152) all participated in fifth-place matches in their respective divisions. And all three came out on top.

Waiters won his battle with First Colonial’s Josh Lepsch, 3-1. Karrat dominated Roman Catholic’s Jared Johnson with a 16-1 technical fall. Groller manhandled First Colonial’s Ryan Henderson in a 15-0 technical fall.
