Wrestlers win Kutztown tourney

Wednesday, January 2, 2019 by STEPHEN ALTHOUSE Special to the Press in Sports

The early results of the 2018-2019 Emmaus wrestling season have seen both highs and lows as head coach Thad Smith continues to mold his young team into the Green Machine he envisions it can become.

Topping the early season triumphs was a strong showing Dec. 15 at the Annual Kutztown Invitational, held at Kutztown High School. The Green Hornets earned a team title with a total of 249 points and in the process also earned six individual titles.

Sophomore Cade Speicher (106) wasted no time showing his dominance, winning his first-place match in a tidy 33 second on a pin. Nick Velde (120) also took first-place honors with three wins and Quin Scott (126) defeated two wrestlers to also claim a first place honor.

Kordell Waiters pinned two separate rivals at 132 to earn another Hornet first-place mark. Jackson Karrat won three matches to take a first place at 138. At 170, Caden Wright also took home a first place title with two match victories.

Jared Groller (152) and Liam Dottery (195) took home second-place finishes at the tournament, while James Bowie (113), Jack Brion (145), Connor Carter (182), Luigi Mannino (220) and James Santichen (285) claimed third-place spots.

The news was not as good for the Green Hornets during the opener Dec. 12 against Stroudsburg in a 52-6 defeat. Only Velde came out on the winning end, defeating Muhammad Ansari in a fall at 1:06.

Emmaus also struggled in a 61-18 loss on Dec. 19 at Bethlehem Catholic. Karrat, Brion and Wright came out on top, at 138, 145 and 170, respectively.

The Hornets picked up wins over East Stroudsburg North and Pleasant Valley last week. Karrat, Wright and Mannino won by fall in both matches.
