UPPER AND LOWER MILFORD COLUMN Vera Cruz Homecoming Aug. 17

If it's August, it's time for the annual Vera Cruz Homecoming. The 63rd annual Homecoming, sponsored by the Vera Cruz Community Association will be held rain or shine at Mystic Chain Park on Main Road East 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 17. Homecoming is Vera Cruz's version of a community block party and is open to everyone (residents and non-residents of Vera Cruz).

Fans of local television personality "Uncle Jeffrey" will definitely want to stop by. Jeff Tapler, known as "Uncle Jeffrey," will broadcast his weekly Health and Happiness show live 3 and 5 p.m. from the event. Musical entertainment will feature School's Out, who will take the stage 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Rehrig Brothers will perform noon to 3 p.m.

The day's events will begin with a Community Homecoming Service at the Vera Cruz E.C. Church 9:30 a.m. The day will be filled with entertainment, cakewalks and a raffle drawing. To volunteer to help or for information, call Audra Berner at 610-967-5432.

Register now for the Upper Milford Youth Association fall lacrosse program. The fall program is focused on first time and beginner players, but players looking to refine and better their skills are also welcome.

First year players get equipment for the fall season at no charge (while supplies last). Coaches and trainers for the fall program include: John 'Trip' Fisher, former collegiate and professional player; founder of LMYA lacrosse and still active in promoting and developing lacrosse throughout the LehighValley; Roxann Betz, former collegiate lacrosse player; assistant coach, Emmaus High School girls lacrosse. Current and former high school players will help each week.

Fall soccer and kinder soccer registrations remain open, but fall soccer (ages six to 19) registration will close Aug. 15. Teams are forming now and are filling up quickly, so don't wait.

The Upper Milford Historical Society meeting 7 p.m. Aug. 28 will feature Dr. Scott Gordon from Lehigh talking about genealogy. The meeting is back in the Upper Milford Township building, the usual meeting place.

The Sept. 25 meeting will include a group discussion about area schools of the past and it is hoped members will relate their stories and experiences from their days in those schools.

Also at the 7 p.m. September meeting, the society will present its quilt to the public. This quilt features places and objects representing township history.

The project was begun in June 2013 with eight members. The pictures were drawn by President Neil Moser, then transferred to the material and sewn by society women. They began with 16 pictures, done in shades of maroon in triangle patterns on an ecru background with a maroon print edging. Irene Frederick quilted the entire piece (approximately 68 inches by 69 inches) by herself. The framed quilt will have a place hanging (under glass) in the hallway of the township building outside the general meeting room.

Upper Milford Township has announced July 7, a mare was quarantined exhibiting signs of rabies. The mare died July 13. The mare was tested in Harrisburg and the owners were notified it did indeed have rabies.

The owners informed the township of the finding July 21 after receiving confirmation of the findings from the lab. It was suspected a bat may have infected the mare. The township urges everyone to take precautionary measures to protect themselves, livestock and pets.

Upper Milford Fire Company, Route 100, Old Zionsville, serves breakfast 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the first Sunday of every month, all you care to eat. There are senior, adult and children's prices. The Emmaus-Upper Milford Joint Environmental Advisory Council will meet 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25 in Emmaus.

Lower Milford Township is organizing the annual fall festival. This year's festival will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 27 rain or shine, on the township grounds, 7607 Chestnut Hill Church Road, Coopersburg.

What dinners would you like to see offered at the Lower Milford Fire Company? Monthly spaghetti dinners have been discontinued, but will still be held occasionally. Go to their website to express your opinion.

The Upper Milford Western District Fire Co. #1 Ladies Auxiliary meets 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at the firehouse. They are always looking for new members.

Following is the August meeting schedule for Lower Milford Township. Meetings begin 7:30 p.m. at the township building unless otherwise noted: The board of supervisors workshop meeting is Aug. 7 and their regular meeting is Aug. 21. The historical commission meets Aug. 12 and the recreation and open space board meets Aug. 13.

There is still a position available on the five-member recreation and open space board helping coordinate the fall festival, recommending park improvements and fundraising. Monthly meetings, as needed, are held at the township building. Additional information is located under the "Boards and Commissions" page of the township website.

St. Peter's Union Church, 7863 St. Peter's Road, will hold a community craft and yard sale 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16. There will be food for sale and a bake sale.

The Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit announces it has finally received construction approval from Upper Milford Township to proceed with the expansion and renovation of the Kuntzelman wing and the project is well underway.
