With three kids and their various activities, Matt and I rarely get out on our own. One Sunday afternoon, we put Lydia and Caroline in charge and headed out to check out cell phone plans. After we were done, we decided to stop for a quick bite to eat. No sooner had we sat down but Matt's phone rang. By the escalating volume of his voice, I could tell it was not good. Lydia had called to tell us Caroline had chipped her tooth. I envisioned a chip that could be filed down but that vision didn't quite mesh with the level of hysteria in Caroline's voice.

Neither of us were prepared for the large chunks missing from her two front teeth. After two years of orthodontia, Caroline was very proud of her teeth and was devastated by the huge gap. Short of bleeding and extreme pain, little emergency dental coverage is available on a Sunday so we had to wait until Monday. Well, it's amazing what modern cosmetic dentistry can accomplish. By 1 p.m. that afternoon, no one would have ever guessed what happened to Caroline and we had our smiling girl back.

I will warn you though: Youtube can be hazardous to your health. Lydia and Caroline had been watching a video and Caroline was laughing so hard that she rocked forward and hit her teeth on my metal sewing machine. It will probably be a while before we feel comfortable leaving them alone again.

The next column will be published Wednesday, May 1; copy deadline is Thursday, April 25.
