Manojkumar Patel, 46, of Allentown, was arrested July 24 for possession with intent to deliver synthetic marijuana at EZ Shoppe, 52 W. Main St., Macungie.

The investigation into the alleged sale of the state banned controlled substance began Aug. 30, 2011 when Sgt. Travis Kocher, of the Macungie Police Department, received information about the sale of the illegal substance at the business.

After learning of the alleged sales, Macungie Police Chief Ed Harry and Kocher went to the business and seized 12 packets of synthetic marijuana amounting to 42.4 grams.

The Aug. 31, 2011, seizure happened just over two months after the Pennsylvania State Senate voted unanimously to ban the substance June 15, 2011. The ban was part of a bill outlawing synthetic marijuana, bath salts and salvia divinorum, a plant the United States Drug Enforcement Agency says can impair judgment due to disruptions of sensory and cognitive functions.

The Lehigh County Drug Task Force was given possession of the synthetic marijuana Sept 6, 2011, and testing confirmed the substance was illegal.

The case is scheduled to be heard in front of Magisterial District Judge Donna R. Butler 11:30 a.m. Aug. 30.
